Weightlifting at the Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024

Recommended Posts

Genuine question, not meant to be rude :p How does this compare to WR's set in weight classes 2-3kg higher/lower in the previous decades?

Like, I see in Rio the gold in 94kg went to someone who 'only' got 403kg total, but in the 85kg it went to a 396 total which seems similar in terms of quality to 404 with a 4kg heavier bodyweight :p

World record for Nasar in the current category :d (before they slightly change the weight classes again to wipe all WR's clean because of you know :p)

Quite clear champion

Yeah, they would probably do that in the future, because IWF does that a lot...

An outstanding performance in this category, that hasn't happened since the 90s

Not close to the lineal WR from the 80s which is 422.5, but that isn't happening most likely never again.

But it's so refreshing to have at least once a pre-Olympics favorite, that comes in and totally dominates like it is expected from him.  This never happens to us in the 21st century .

Up to 89-90-91 kg. They have switched so much the categories in weightlifting, that you can't be sure, which is historically Middleweight, which is Light Heavyweight etc.

WR before 1992 in 90 kg - 422.5 from 23px-Flag_of_the_Soviet_Union.svg.png Viktor Solodov

WR from 1992-1997 in 91 kg - 412.5 from :RUS Aleksey Petrov

Karlos being at 89 has 2 kilo disadvantage, but i think he has a few more in him. If he was 91 i'd say he could challenge for 410. But let's see, because he is only 20 years old and has time to "grow up" even more.

5 out of 7 medalists of Bulgaria not born there :yikes: (I know Nasar is a bit different case).

* 4 out of 7. Nasar's father is Lebanese, but that is the only foreign thing in him. :p From a young baby he has lived in Bulgaria, practically his whole life. If his name was Ivan no one would ever think of anything about his origin.

    • Yeah, we have such a strong crop of Juniors, that we can’t take them all. They all have exciting trajectories but to predict what Junior swimmers will is always difficult. Better to let them all swim together at Juniors than rocketing them all up to seniors and swimming a prelim and going home.
    • Hanlon is the most unlucky, in my opinion. Aside from relay cover, she's the 50m champ and they made a point of including consideration for those events being in LA for the other discretionary picks. Essentially she has the same case for selection as Max Morgan (albeit without the trajectory right now).   Blocksidge's form was way off this week (compared to her previous bests). Obviously being still young you could put that down to relative inexperience. Still, she has World and European Juniors that she could still be selected for this summer. There's an argument that performing well at those might be as beneficial as going to Singapore.   That said, I'm happy that they did take a bunch of discretionary picks. That's not always been the case.
