The difference is that the divers at least had a straight fight to decide who got spots AND some of that was decided after multiple competitions where we won spots ie had Cheng not got the 10m spot at the Euro Games, Spendolini-Sirieix would have got a quota at the worlds this year with her performance. The men's 3m is slightly harsher, I'll grant. There's also the complicating factor that only 2 divers could compete at a WC, so there wasn't equal chance for the divers to earn the quotas.

But Bale has had his own chances for to get a quota and hasn't got them. Feels really harsh to ditch Bargeron.

I agree it is harsh, but I think the same approach as per Men’s Triathlon (Dickinson over Brownlee) - you have a chance in the Mixed 10m but only if Bale is in the team.

The difference is that Dickinson and Brownlee had a literal H2H shootout in Poland, which Dickinson won, over the distance that the relay will take place.

If British Shooting have done something similar, fine. But I'm unaware that has happened.

  • 7 months later...

British Shooting have announced the athletes on their World Class Programme. As part of the preparation for LA, they have introduced a new classification - LA Fast Track - which is designed to support athletes with potential to progress towards Podium Potential in this Olympic cycle.

Trap

Podium/Podium Potential: Aaron Heading, Matt Coward Holley, Nathan Hales & Lucy Hall

LA Fast Track: Ewen Ross & Tom Betts

Skeet

Podium/Podium Potential: Ben Llewellin, Mitchell Brooker-Smith & Amber Rutter

LA Fast Track: Arran Eccleston & Maddie Russell

Rifle

Podium/Podium Potential: Seonaid McIntosh

LA Fast Track: Dean Bale, Mike Bargeron & Ruth Mwandumba

Pistol

LA Fast Track: James Miller, Sam Gowin & Jess Liddon

There's not much movement since last year's announcement - Sam Gowin moves from the Podium Potential to LA Fast Track. Most of the Fast Track Athletes were part of the National Academy squad last year.

Next month we should also get announcement of the Olympic Potential Programme athletes.

Team :GBR having a pretty decent tie at the ongoing European Championships

Ben Llewellin crowned European Champion in the Men's Skeet (Where was that kind of form when places in Paris were at stake!)

Matthew Coward-Holley took silver in the Men's Trap

Amber Rutter took silver in the Women's Skeet

If these results were repeated at next year's championships, we would secure 3 quotas for LA. If they are repeated in 2027 or 2028, we would earn a quota for the men's skeet.
