The same names? I think this team is  safe for olympic direct quota.

Yep - same squad that took bronze at Europeans and yeah they are safe for the quota but think they would have been hoping for a better ride given their recent form.

GB men up against New Zealand in the 1st round of the men's team pursuit with 3 of the 4 NZL riders being on the team in Glasgow when they won the bronze medal. It may not be the strongest field overall, but we should still get some pretty good indications of who is going to be in the mix for medals when it comes to Paris.

:GBR men team pursuit into gold final with time of 3:48.996 - just under a second ahead of :NZL. It's a good time without being great - at world champs last year it would have got them into the bronze medal match-up - but you have to think they still have more in the tank for the final.

Really surprised by :ITA - it just hasn't clicked for them today despite have Ganna in the squad and after a relatively poor qualifying, they came off second best against :AUS so will race for bronze.

Think all GB cycling fans can breathe sigh of relief safe in the knowledge that the pursuit squad are very much back in a qualifying spot for Paris.

Very quick back of a fag packet calculation and I am tired so this could be wrong.....

If :GBR win the men's team pursuit final then I think they would move up into 5th place in the Olympic rankings overtaking not only :BEL, but also :GER and :FRA.

They'd also be ahead of :CAN, but they still have their continental championship to come in the next few weeks so it would be temporary.

Team sprint 1st rounds completed and in the absence of Germany, :GBR women looking good for gold although :CHN posted their fastest time in a couple of years so GB can't take it for granted.

GB's men's sprint squad continue to be the weak link in the squad - although they won their heat, they were barely any quicker than they were in qualifying and were the only winning team that failed to break the 43 second barrier.

    • It’s just a great weasel word.   We all want  to come back to International sport "when they are in compliance". But there are very differing opinions on what that means.
    • I doubt that.  It will mean only a doping rubber stamp and a promise not to swear at the ice skating moppets in public,
    • So, kind of forgotten about at the end of the summer season, we have two events to go in the World Triathlon Championship Series, the last WTCS regular season races of the year in Weihai , then the Final in  in mid-October.  All to play for because there are double points up for grabs in the last race, so effectively nothing really decided yet.  Races are tomorrow morning  time, so pretty much overnight in Europe.   Races are full Olympic length and apparently a hilly cycling course.  Here's the situation and preview for the Men.     World Triathlon Championship Series Weihai ready for another epic Wilde vs Yee battle | World Triathlon Championship Series   And for the women   Women's World Triathlon Championship Series rankings to heat up in Weihai | World Triathlon Championship Series
    • "once it returns to compliance" would mean it renounces its claim to Crimea... Can't see that happening any time soon.
    • Maggie MacNeil   She was an Olympic, World (LC and SC) Pan American Games and Commonwealth Games Champion. Highly decorated career.
    • when I raised the question, I forgot that that there was no U23 medals for women just a couple years ago...
    • it happens when you think too much ahead about the next match (vs Brazil) while you have a tough opponent ahead. they gave up 4 silly goals in the first half and then it was a mountain to climb.  Iran had a last penalty exactly in the last second which hit the bar   have to admit Iran played terrible the entire match and didn't deserve the win but Morocco is also a very ugly team. lots of acting, deceiving, diving and protesting in the 2nd half. putting Iran in 5 fouls very early which made the team playing cautious
    • Morocco won after almost being stolen the victory by the refs. Those officials should be sent home after calling that joke foul in the last second.
    • and another medal. in Road Race this time.   Bronze despite a face crash in the middle of the race, her 5th medal of the year, 4th from 3 different sports World Championships

To measure nations' performance few terms have been introduced 'Quota' is number of participants per country in each event. Qualified but non-participation is not included in Quota. 'Top 6' is the number of events a country finished in Top 6. Conversion = Top 6 / Quota which implies Contingent quality. 'Normalized Points' = Points / (Number of events in that sport). For example, if a country wins just 1 Gold in Archery, they will get 10 points but 10 points/ 9 events = 1.11 Normalized Points. This metric will be high for countries who earn points in multiple sports. Sport' can be defined as set of events governed by same federation   Salient Observations 1) The nations' rank for points is closely related to rank of total medals won 2) Top spot for  is deserved as they have the highest participation, almost 70% conversion and dominate many sports like Athletics, Swimming and Table Tennis 3)  finished 9th despite limited participation 4) Best ever successful edition for  as finished 21st in medal table and accumulated medals and points in Fencing, Table Tennis and Athletics   Please put in your comments and feedback.
