I don't think it has much to do with Hamilton himself. F1 was insanely boring for years during the Schumacher/Ferrari years for example, and it wasn't much better in the Vettel/Red Bull years. Same thing now with Hamilton/Mercedes, but saying a very good driver (because let's face it, he definitely is) is the worst thing to ever happen to a sport where legendary champions died behind the wheel is a bit...exaggerated.

Schumacher is infinitely more likeable and charismatic. He had a string of memorable rivalries for many years with just as exceptional and interesting drivers, which has been lacking in F1 in the last 7-8 years. He had the aura that made you believe he was the best. No one was talking about the car 15-20 years ago, like they do now. Everything about Hamilton's persona on and off the circuits is off-putting and the whole world, bar an island, is dreading the time when history will be disgraced..

Nobody was talking about the car? I was 12-14 years old and we absolutely talked about how annoying it was for the Ferrari to be so much better and how useless it was to have Schumacher top all those record lists and how sad it was to have boring Schumacher be the number one instead of the way more likeable Barrichello. Yes, of course Schumacher was a great driver, so was Vettel, so is Hamilton.

Much like Schumacher, I do find him off-putting in general (although I still cheered for Hamilton in 2008).

Schumacher likeable? You sound like a Ferrari fan? Most of the neutral F1 world had enough of him sooner rather than later (which doesn't reflect respecting his driving skills).

David Coulthard would agree with me!

So, roughly 60/40 in terms of kneeling/not kneeling and it wasn't even during the anthem. All well, everyone was respectful and now it's on to the race.

When he joined Ferrari they were no where near being the most dominating team. Williams and Mclaren were at the top for 15 years. He joined the underdog team and didn't waltz to the best like other people.. As time passes people tend to remember only the end, but his vision and dedication for the car turned the tides in F1.

Mercedes was not much special with Rosberg and Schumacher...until Hamilton got there and they became the big team.

    • It's all hogwash especially in the short attention span generation. Like nobody cares about Free Tibet anymore either. Free Palestine will last a lot longer due to Saudi Arabia becoming a sponsorship force in sports.   Israel is too weak in soccer to qualify from UEFA zone. The only time they qualified was from the Asian zone and they only beat Australia & New Zealand who were complete nobodies in the 1960s. No such luck in the 60 years since.
    • Oh I assure you FIFA dodger a bullet with Israel not qualifying…   But ya that’s kind of the thing, shut up and dribble is a mantra anti LGBT people have used often. I don’t think it’s hypocritical to remind them of their position
    • Ah, yes but that's not how pro athletes are taught in North America these days? Shut up & dribble is xenophobic, racist or whatever? The hypocrisy of some of these policies were exposed during 2022 World Cup already where the Saudis played it smart and waved their own "Free Palestine' slogans. Forget LGBT rights for a moment, how many 'Free Palestine' flags will be waved in 2026? Or will those be confiscated by default? Somehow I feel this won't be met with similar backlash when China clamped down on 'Free Tibet' in 2008 OG. Saudi Arabia is more important to global markets than Iran & Egypt
    • Wisła Płock just assumed 1st position after five consecutive draws. Must be first time ever a team on a five match winless streak actually moves up to league top.
    • Well ya, which is why the Egyptian and Iranian teams can shut up and dribble :P
    • The problem is, the World Cup is not a local event. Overall it's another storm in a teacup. LGBT rights in Muslim countries won't change a damn inch becuse of one soccer match in Seattle
    • After looking at the entry list of athletes in the official website, I've changed some of my predictions in the Olympic events with these changes:   Total Tally: Thailand 87, Singapore 51, Vietnam 48, Indonesia 33, Philippines 24, Malaysia 22, Cambodia 1     Badminton (5): Malaysia 2, Thailand 1, Singapore 1, Indonesia 1   Men’s Singles: Switched from Thailand to Singapore     Boxing (11): Thailand 8, Philippines 2, Vietnam 1   Men: -54 kg (-55 kg): Thailand, -60 kg: Thailand, -63.5 kg (-65 kg): Thailand, -69 kg (-70 kg): Thailand, -80 kg: Philippines   Women: -50 kg (-51 kg): Thailand, -54 kg: Thailand, -57 kg: Thailand, -60 kg: Vietnam, -66 kg (-65 kg): Thailand, -70 kg: Philippines     Sailing (7): Thailand 4, Singapore 2, Malaysia 1   ICLA 6: Switched from Thailand to Malaysia     Taekwondo (8): Thailand 6, Vietnam 2   -67 kg: Switched from  Vietnam to Thailand     Weightlifting (5): Thailand 2, Philippines 1, Indonesia 1, Malaysia 1   Men: -65 kg: Malaysia, -94 kg (-95 kg): Thailand   Women: -53 kg: Thailand, -69 kg: Philippines, -77 kg: Indonesia   * I saw that they have actually change the weight categories to almost match that of IWF newly introduced categories from several months ago.      Wrestling (12): Vietnam 7, Philippines 3, Indonesia 2   Men's Freestyle: -57 kg: Philippines, -65 kg: Vietnam, -74 kg: Vietnam, -86 kg: Philippines Men's Greco-Roman: -67 kg: Indonesia, -77 kg: Vietnam, -87 kg: Indonesia, -97 kg: Vietnam Women's Freestyle: -50 kg: Vietnam, -53 kg: Vietnam, -57 kg: Vietnam, -62 kg: Philippines
