doea new zealand have more female modern penthatletes ?

I don't know, however NZ sometimes declines continental places, so probably that is her main concern.

Looking over their selection policies, there isn't one for modern pentathlon, one of the few sports without one. I guess the Olympic committee thought they had no chance at qualifying :p

That is, if NZOC selects her.

Qualifications in modern pentathlon are for athletes, not for NOC. The "choosing" is only in the case when there is more than two from the same NOC qualified, which surely won't be the case for New Zealand.

And one more thing - before Fakhrutdinova and Savkin changed from :RUSto :UZB, some people here were sure of "free" quota for :KGZ. Well, the first non-qualified NOC is... :THA .

That's probably because the Thai team got over their fear of horses. :p

The NOC can still decline the quota. Their lack of selection policy gives me hope. At the very least the athlete can argue it.

I doubt they would. It's the only way to promote this sport in NZL, breaking the monopole of Australia on the continent for more than just this time.

To be fair, they have declined continental spots in fencing, archery, table tennis before. For fencing it was not even an Oceanian spot, but rather Asian/Oceanian!

New Zealand is named after a Dutch province after all. They don't care about promoting the sport, if the athlete can't reasonably guarantee to get a top 16 result the quota will be refused.

    • I think the reason is that it's generally preferable to have a fast shooter in the 1st leg, and especially in the prone shooting, where Hofer is quite slow.   Now, I'm not saying I agree with the choice, because I don't. I think it's going to neutralize Giacomel's skiing skills in the 1st lap at least.   I guess the idea is to try and set a very fast pace in the 1st leg, which is usually quite tactical, but I'm afraid that's going to force Giacomel to risk too much because he will feel he has to make some time somehow.   Regardless, Italy must be on the podium tomorrow. I think that would be crucial for the following races as well. I think France is the clear favorite, but the other teams are not stronger than Italy on paper.
