Men's Field Hockey FIH Olympic Games Qualifier 2019

Recommended Posts

Sports are crazy sometimes. I feel for the Irish team and fans, a really tough way to lose.

But, Canada off to Tokyo! This was our gold medal, as they'll almost surely be blown out of the water in the Olympics

Heartbreaking but at the end of they day we were three goals clear on aggregate and blew it. It’s as simple as that. No excuse for throwing away that large of a lead. It’s so typical of Ireland.

Doing it frame-by-frame (or as close as one can manually get)... It looks like the Irish player put his stick down first, and then the Canadian player basically stepped over it...

You can see that Canadian shoe (white strip) is on an angle and above the Irish stick.

Oof don't know what to say then, I don't have enough knowledge to know what should be called if that was what happened. Most rules in this sport are very against the defenders (basically they have to be extremely clean in every situation), but I don't know about this.

As for Canada at the games... clearly their aspiration would be to beat the weakest teams (Japan/SA) and that's it. This was their gold medal. Wouldn't have been any different for Ireland, both teams have almost exactly the same level (I predicted 51/49 for Canada in fact).
