so, after the end of this week's tournament, we can give a look at the updated Olympic Ranking in the Men's Team Sabre...

tbh, no major changes were expected and no major changes happened...

actually, the final ranking of today's tournament is almost the same of the current OQR...

among the top 5, only Russia could make up a couple of points on Germany (they are 5th and 4th in the OQR, meanwhile today they were 4th and 5th respectively)...

and among the Nations currently in qualifying position, only USA and Egypt lost a few points over the teams already ahead of them as much as over the immediate followers, but they are still well above the "danger zone" (Egypt only need to end up in the top 16 of the final OQR, as they don't have any real opponent among the African teams)...

therefore, this is the projected ranking after the Cairo World Cup stage...

1. :KOR KOR (1st Today), 296 Pts (Q)
2. :HUN HUN (2nd Today), 244 Pts (Q)
3. :ITA ITA (3rd Today), 224 Pts (Q)
4. :GER GER (5th Today), 196 Pts (Q)

5. :RUS RUS (4th Today), 182 Pts (Q, top European Team outside the Top 4 overall)
6. :IRI IRI (6th Today), 174 Pts (Q, top Asian Team outside the Top 4 overall)
7. :USA USA (9th Today), 163 Pts (Q, top Panamerican Team outside the Top 4 overall)
8. :EGY EGY (14th Today), 141 Pts (Q, top African Team outside the Top 4 overall)

9. :FRA FRA (8th Today), 138 Pts
10. :ROU ROU (10th Today), 137 Pts
11. :CHN CHN (7th Today), 134 Pts
12. :GEO GEO (13th Today), 128 Pts
13. :JPN JPN (11th Today), 129 Pts
14. :CAN CAN (16th Today), 114 Pts
15. :UKR UKR (12th Today), 109 Pts
16. :GBR GBR (15th Today), 105 Pts

and for Volpi and the sabre specialists, the season opened like the previous one ended...in a total disaster...:wall:

Volpi was clearly defeated (15-10) in today's round of 64 by :CAN Harvey, most sabre specialists (among them, Gregorio and Vecchi, the supposed no. 1 & 2 of our team) were also eliminated very early in today's competition (by fencers well behind them in the WR), with the best 2 (Criscio and Battiston) only making the top 16...

let's see if someone among the survivors can somehow save the day...

add this to the skiing and luge results...and it looks a pretty depressing day for the Italian sport...

    • impossible, there are not enough venues in both towns and I mean, Milan doesn't have an Olympic Stadium, a decent Tennis Complex and a big Swimming Complex (not to mention the sea) Rome, on the other hand, doesn't have a Rowing/Canoeing Basin nor arenas and stadiums for the team sports beyond football and rugby there's no chance that all those venues would be built from scratch, meanwhile if we use both cities we already have almost everything we need, especially the most expensive and controversial sites

    • https://nypost.com/2026/01/31/sports/team-canada-skeleton-coach-joe-cecchini-speaks-out-after-american-katie-uhlaender-manipulation-claim/   Oh the drama....   Cecchini: “I don’t really wanna speak negatively about Katie, but Katie was not on the World Cup team. She wasn’t a top-tier athlete in that program anymore. She was at the end of her career. I would personally would rather race against Katie. She’s not as competitive as the other athletes,” he said. “It’s probably really unfair to say and not really where I want to go with this but that’s where we are with that.”   Uhlaender: “If I were Canada, I would be concerned in how this coach is representing the Olympic values for his country,” Uhlaender told Fox News Digital. “He hurt a whole field of athletes, all with dreams, and this sends the message that they don’t matter unless they are number one. All athletes matter, and we all deserve to compete fairly, with integrity, and respect. He did not respect anyone in that field. “This is not about my resume or how good the athletes were in the race. This is about the fact that he intentionally manipulated the competition to hurt myself and 13 other countries because he felt it necessary to eliminate all possibility. That is against the spirit of sport and not what the Olympic movement represents.”   Isn't it great when other people's dirty laundry is aired?  /sarcasm     (I was a little surprised to see NPR pick this up, but per this article, Uhlaender preemptively recorded the phone call after receiving a text from Cecchini that said he had 'bad news' for her.)
    • Idea (that I don't want to mess with right now, but someone else can steal the idea): Could feed the docs from LA28 + Paris 2024 through AI and see what it says.  (Would just take downloading them, perhaps merging them for ease of upload, and passing it through.)
    • If you have time would love to see a sport by sport overview of the changes/new sports
    • Slowly going through the documents.   Looks like canoe slalom qualifiers will be a bit different. More kayak cross quotas which will let nations to essentially qualify two kayakers.
    • How about we choose either Rome or Milano  I hate this timeline we have entered of multiple host cities / countries. The football World Cup became ludicrous, we don't need the Olympics to join them. At least not more than they already are.
