In the past few games, Canada (and other nations) was given an overall athlete quota which they then divided it through the various sports. -

Actually now that I look at the numbers, it makes even less sense. Almost the entire reduction of 4800 athlete down to 3000 is explained by the removal of events. There's no reason to halve our swim team, considering we likely have the third strongest team -

Atheltics is not having such small numbers for its track events so swimming has been shortchanged having to have straight finals of just 8. -

So is every swimming event just going to be a straight final? We send twice as much to the Olympics. We might as well not even compete in the freestyle relays with those numbers. I know they are trying to save the games, but the biggest draw to the Commonwealth Games was it was a best on best event. Once you start messing with that the games will become an after thought. -
Swimming Canada has been given a quota of only 12 swimmers
