India has recently started to harbour ambitions of hosting the Olympics probably 2036 hence. Is IOC too firm on Jul-Aug window, so will this go against India's bid as its the monsoon season. Sporting events in India are typically held in Nov-Dec or Feb-Mar

Yes unfortunately, the new rules appear to be very firm and were introduced after Sydney 2000 which commenced their Games in September.

These new rules favoured Brisbane 2032 but effectively ruled out Sydney, Melbourne and the other southern capitals from bidding again as it is too wet further south of Brisbane.

I will be surprised if they will be that pleased to have a bid where swimming is so far from the host city. Particualy in somewhere like Spain where there are major political tensions between Madrid and Barcelona.

Handing the Olympics to Brisbane won't stop the Gulf sheiks from chasing that Doha ticket. Unless IOC openly says Qatar is banned from hosting the SOG in the future, that one won't be denied.

It's true that our NOC president said that the candidature would have some venues outside of Madrid to save some money and he specifically mentioned Barcelona (swimming), La Seu (canoeing slalom), Sevilla (rowing and sprint canoeing) and Palma/Valencia (track cycling). Right now none of these sports has a proper venue in Madrid, but in the case of swimming last year the city approved extra funding to continue building a big swimming complex close to the Wanda Metropolitano, so they will probably won't need to have it in Barcelona.

We haven't opened a specific thread yet, but Madrid has announced today that the city will bid (again) for the 2036 Summer Olympics.

It’s the unsafe extremely hot weather conditions that will stop a July/Augustbid from Qatar dead in it’s tracks.

July/August temperatures in Qatar are far too unsafe for all involved, athletes, officials, spectators particularly outdoor events, even at night.

The 2022 World Cup is being held in Nov/Dec in air conditioned stadiums.

The IOC’s new rules are simply not going to allow an Olympic Games  be held in November or December - period.

Money always talks and Qatar doesn't have to host the SOG in November or December. Besides IOC rules can always change - and Qatar will keep bidding for those SOG. You can't host them in USA, Australia or Western Europe all the time to deny Qatar their wish. IOC has buckled down to Chinese money already, they will do so to Qatar as well. It's only a matter of time.

I personally don't see Qatar hosting anytime soon unless the IOC can't get another credible bid.

If by next year they name their stadium “1976 Gold Medalist, fencing, Dr Thomas Bach” complete with a 24 karat 30+ meters statue, Doha will get it

    • Although it was a terrible Olympics for Canada, and my two favourite sports (Hockey and Short Track) really didn't work out for us, there were a couple of fun times.    -Women's Pursuit team winning gold because while it was not unexpected at all, it was still a great triumph against an amazing adversary.    -Dubreuil getting a surprise bronze in speed skating 500m.    -Really all of speed skating, Canada and otherwise.    -I really want to say Dubois getting gold in short track, but the whole thing was a mess.    -The last two ends of the men's curling gold medal game.    -Kingsbury getting gold. But it was more relief than excitement, unfortunately.    -I really like the luge relay. Canada was not involved, unfortunately, but it's always fun to watch.    -Men's freeski big air final was nuts! In all the good ways. That was truly the highest level of competition I've seen in a very long time.    -The dog crossing the finish line in cross country, which should have been the meme of the Olympics (not that...other thing).
    • It was also nice to have actual crowds again. I think the Beijing organizers did the best they could given the COVID regulations that still existed in China at the time, but it sure did dampen the atmosphere *a lot*.
    • I was in premium economy as well, the extra five inches of leg room definitively helped me stay sane.   For BA I was in business class and I just wasn't impressed at all, despite the cabin itself being really good (it was a 787-900 so their newer business class product). The service was just... not good enough for international business class - they actually made me appreciate Air Canada xD . With Condor I could forgive the service not being that good because of how little (relatively) I paid, and the seat was comfortable enough.
    • Yes. This was the best WOG since at least Sochi 2014. I only started paying attention to the Olympics after London 2012, so small sample size. But, this was the best WOG I can remember. European fans and atmosphere make everything better in my opinion.
    • There were lots of good moments , this olympics felt so special (I am talking of WOG). The last time I really enjoyed viewing WOG was in Sochi & this tops it. So many feel good moments, very well attended event with spectators filling up stands & making an atmosphere. So many top performances, but for me the  women team dominating the Biathlon event was really special. All 3 of them were just so good & gave top performance. I love it how the female commentator pronounced  Lou Jeanmonnot  & finally grazie mille  we loved it! Thanks for making me fall in love with winter sports again
    • I'm surprised that some Hungarians here are interested in some Nazis in Kiev, instead of their country's economic decline over the last 15-20 years, falling under Romania's level of GDP, when around 2000 it was the richest country in the all former post-communist region. But I understand that this is Orban's tactic to continue ruling and stealing the country, to distract from truly important matters and focus on trivial matters. Clinton's campaign slogan in the USA many years ago: "The economy, stupid!" I think that the current opposition leader in HUN should probably do the same- just do your thing and let Orban himself with all of this Soros, Nazis, etc, only the Martians are still missing in this madness, but that may come to pass
    • I found Condor really nice. I did upgrade myself, so maybe thats why. I would fly them again
    • So, wanted to update on this now that I’m back home in Seattle to say I had a really good time in Milan. I ended up not going to events outside of Milan (I went to short track, speed skating and hockey), and it was probably a good decision to keep things simple for my first Olympics.   Getting around in Milan was a breeze, and I feel things were pretty well organized at the venues (though the ice hockey venue definitively could have used a couple more weeks of work). I was especially pleased with the speed skating venue, given it’s a temporary track it looked really good once you were actually in your seat and things were well organized for spectators (even though it was a looooong walk to and from the train station).   So ya, happy with the experience, as a newbie to both attending the Olympics and traveling in Europe. Def made me want to attend the French Alps in 2030 (and subject them to my horrible-for-a-native French accent xD )   Thanks to  for being good hosts.   As an aside, I now understand why people dislike British Airways, and Condor was surprisingly okay, though it was definitively a "you get what you paid for" situation (flew SEA-LHR to get to Europe and FRA-SEA on the way back).   Edit: oh, and big shout-out to the volunteers who were universally lovely.
