Like last year in Montreal, only six different countries won at least one medal.

 

Last year  won 4 golden medals (all by Shaoang Liu) and  won 1 silver medal, whereas  and  (not participating) won no medals. 

 

Home nation  ended with the lowest number of gold medals since 2001.

Couldn't catch much of this tournament live and only just caught up on the highlights. Super impressed by Velzeboer! I hope her and Schulting can keep making each other stronger in a healthy rivalry.

Dutch girls being the dominant force on the short rink as well. Although I think Sarrault, Desmet and Choi are still legit threats for the years to come. Schulting didn't seem at all happy though with the threat within. I can see her break towards a commercial team alongside the Desmets, as there was also a rift with the coaching team for the siblings.

 

Men's tournament seemed to be a little more open as a whole, with only Park a standout, but not as unbeatable as Velzeboer.

Yeah, the whole Desmet thing was a rather shit move...

 

For those who hadn't read it anywhere: the  Desmet's had been training with the Dutch team for years, they have basically been as much a part of the team as the Dutch skaters. Then, a few days before the world championships, they (Desmet) were told they wouldn't be coached by the Dutch coach in Seoul, so out of nowhere they had to fall back to the Belgian coaches. According to the Desmet's, there's not much against the Belgian coaches, because they seemed happy with their help, but the thing of being punched in the face so shortly before a big event...not good.

I hadn't even heard of this one yet. There's a lot of unrest in the Dutch team, with Knegt's repeated public complaints and Schulting visibly searching for her new role now that she's not the sole leader of the team anymore. Meanwhile Velzeboer and Van 't Wout are flourishing under Kerstholt.

 

A new commercial team with Otter, Schulting and the Desmet siblings would have been a serious option, but apparently they couldn't find enough sponsors to make it viable.

This is out of the question after the news from last weekend. It was presented mainly within the speed skating context, where skaters in  are in different commercial teams, sometimes with other top athletes from other countries, most notably  Nao Kodaira and  Bart Swings in the past few years, but the Dutch skating union (KNSB) has decided this is not allowed from 2024 (winter) anymore for top eight athletes (they are not allowed to train in Heerenveen, which is basically paid for by the Dutch olympic committee), so Swings and  Martin Liiv are now basically out of their commercial team. These are the most notable ones for the time being as Kodaira retired (and also moved back after a few years)

 

I sense there was more of a malice in the Belgian short track team getting quite serious though, even though not mentioned as the most important point, the Desmets also are forced to break with the Dutch team in similar fashion. And well, this means a commercial move is out of the question now.
