what the hell! this time this is really the top event of the sport...we're going to have for the first time ever the best of the WSL world and the best of the "other surfers" facing each other...

 

that's the Olympic magic, a miracle made possible only by Surf's inclusion in the Olympic program...

Quite impressive, considering that for most of the WSL athletes the quota place would be decided at the WSL or even the 2020 Surfing Games for the small handful that fail. It however may make it harder for athletes to grab the continental quota (they must finish in the top 30).

Has there ever been an event where  doesn’t haka? Today’s was just sad, though generally the haka is performed shirts/jerseys on, so they did add a unique Surfing flavor I guess.

OK, the winner of the women's heat #7 is my absolute new idol...she made my day...she's from Chile and her name is Lorena Fica...

 

for those who can't speak Italian, fica literally means "pussy" (and it's not even the medical term for that, it's the form you shouldn't use in any public speech)...

What is the relationship of this event -which I have never heard of - to the World Surfing Tour -where all the best surfers compete ?

 

All the best surfers are non European but Europe ( with the French worst )  think they have a God given right to run everything

this is the actual world championships, with all the best surfers in the world (since we have WSL and non-WSL specialists)...

 

the WSL is just a professional elite circuit with the best athletes from basically only the "surfing Nations"...they just established that league because they wanted to take advantage of the financial aspects and build a place where the best among the best were more easily recognizable by the fans...

 

it's like the UFC and the other MMA organizations...the first is supposed to have the best fighters, but that's not always nor necessarily true...they're just the reachest, better organized and more "media friendly" crew, rather than the cradle of the best specialists...

I hope one day she marries ecuatorian race walker Andres Chocho, means the same as Fica in spanish

I doubt that an American or Australian surfing aficionado  ( ie from the best surfing countries and cultures ) would agree with your analysis
