She may well end up competing in both - but she can't get the quota for GB in both. So, because the C1 came before the K1, she becomes the "qualified" athlete in C1 and Spicer would be the "qualified" athlete in K1. 

 

At this point, it is only really important in determining which athletes will be able to compete for the Kayak-Cross quotas in Prague next year.

In gymnastics certainly and probably in cycling but canoe slalom?

 

GB has produced world champions in this sport for a long time.  Liz Sharnan, Lynn Simpson, Paul Farrant, Albert Kerr, Shaun Pearce and most notably Richard Fox - father of Jessica and Naomi - won world titles and multiple medals prior to 2000.

Sure, like cycling we always had some good individuals, but never a full multi-discipline team

I'll concede that although performances varies from event to event. In the men's K-1 they won seven individual world titles in the 23 years before 2000 and only one in the 23 years since.

Canoe slalom has always been a relatively successful GBR olympic niche - not world leading, mind, but always with somebody competitive. Mind you, it used to be the same for Shooting and Archery, and GBR currently have a small number of excellent (mostly female) athletes, but no longer any depth.

 

These ebbs and flows through niche sports are intriguing - like how GBR is all but the second nation in the world in diving - Albeit a LONG way behind Chins. How Ireland became a particular force in lightweight sculling, or the swiss domination of mountain bike...

If you told anyone in the 90's that GBR would have multiple world champions, a multiple Olympic champion, and would be clearly one of the 'Big 5' nations in the world at the sport (though Italy are closing on making that 6) You would have been committed to the local funny farm, and rightly so. The heroics begun by Beth Tweddle, and before her Neil Thomas, have led to extraordinary places.

That leaves Kimberley Woods free to take part in the Kayak-Cross qualifier in Prague next year.

 

On the men's side, 

C1 - Adam Burgess

K1 - Joe Clarke

Not sure our C1 men do a lot of Kayak-Cross so team for Prague qualifier will probably be led by Jonny Dickson and Chris Bowers

I'm still confused. Surely GBR already has maximum quotas - 1 per slalom event, and they ca all enter the KX

According to the Official Document a NOC can enter 6 athletes, although I am Sure GBR would only take 5 as Mallory would compete in both C1 and K1.

Shooting is certainly niche and basically shotgun related. We've never really been competitive in pistol shooting. Not certain but I don't think we've ever won a medal in that discipline. As for rifle shooting you have to go back to the days of Alistair Allan and double Olympic champion Malcolm Cooper for the last time we medalled.

 

The Swiss also used to have a niche in triathlon although that has faded and suddenly France has become a - maybe the - major power in the sport.
