How kind of you to avoid naming Bertens there :p

I had great hopes for Bertens after that amazing Madrid run. And she really had a panic attack after being considered as one of the top favorites at French Open and after she basically disappeared. Wasted match points at Rosmalen and her mentality after that got even worse :(

I honestly don't see how that has even remotely as much of an influence as winning the 24th Grand Slam would have. At all. Serena Williams really does not need the Olympics.

True, but winning a gold is such a unique experience. For most Americans here winning gold twice would be on par with her winning 24 grand slams. Gold Medalists are just held in great regard in the US

Right of course, but another Olympic gold would solidify Serena as one of the greats. It would also make her advertising deals just a bit better, even if she makes the record.

Of topic question here: Is the Olympics considered a Grand Slam by people, or is it in a special catagory to tennis fans?

Olympic gold medal is waaaay below any of the Grand Slam titles. Only ones hyping it are the ones who never won a GS but have won the gold medal (Elena Dementieva). This isn't even close.

I tell you, don't believe in the second gold medal talk. Serena wants Court's record and NOTHING else.

But not for her and not really in the tennis world, and that's what it's about in this case :)

No, no and no. Tennis is one of these Olympic sports where Olympics are NOT the most important event out there. Golf is obviously the second and baseball the third.

True. Plus, she’s already a household name here. Maybe I just want her to win a second gold . After Osaka, she’s my favorite player.

Yes, I’m aware of that. However, many of the world’s best players will still show up. I only know the names of players with Olympic medals or multiple grand slam titles.

I’d put Football as first by the way. Then Baseball, then Tennis, then Golf, then Basketball. Those are the main offenders. However, I believe only Baseball and Football should be kicked from the Olympics.

    • Where did you get that?   I'm not sure I would have considered her to have dissapeared from out of nowhere, at least since after Tokyo... she did win medals at the next two World Championships. I think it's just recently, she's been struggling with injury which is why she's completely out of form...
    • Even though I'm not the biggest fan of her, always sucks to see a career ending through injury and not on your own terms
    • This is going to have an effect on very likely 0 athletes, possibly 1 or 2 we don't really know about yet. It's really mostly the cheapest possible way for them to make a sort of political statement, without having any significant backlash since it won't really affect anyone at the top level of international sports.   Edit: worded a bit wrong, I was thrown off by everywhere 'trans women' being mentioned as the target of this. Of course there is also the somewhat larger category of DSD and the likes, which will certainly affect a few athletes - unfortunately they are often thrown under the bus or mentioned as 'not really women anyway' or something like that, despite, you know, being.
    • Mary Rand has died aged 86. The first British woman to win a Gold in track and field at the 1964 Tokyo Games (where she also took home a further two medals in the Women’s 4x100m relay and Pentathlon).
    • Athing Mu competed in the USA trials in 2024 and 2025 post the 2023 rule changes. She also won Gold in 2022 and Bronze in 2023.    Jelimo the jury is out. She doesn’t look male like the other two do.
    • People focus on trans people because it's easier to pinpoint the affected athletes. Meanwhile it's the athletes with (suspected) DSDs that will have tougher time to convince the authorities and the public opinion that they belong to women's sports.
    • badminton queen Carolina Marin announced that she can't take part into the home Europeans in the upcoming weeks because of her injured knee and calls it a career 😭
    • yes, there are (or there was, at least) don't forget that the women's 800m had world and olympic champions like Semenya, Jelimo and Nyonsaba...basically, it was 10 years of DSD winners only the same Athing Mu was suspected to be DSD (never confirmed, but somehow she totally disappeared after Tokyo) then, there were the 2 girls from Namibia (1 won a medal over 200m in Tokyo) in Italy we have the living scandal Valentina Petrillo (a paralympian!!!), who's actually a real man not to mention the weightlifter from who took part into the Tokyo Games so, it's a real problem all around the globe, not just a US crusade against a few woke idiots
    • First big meet ofthe Outdoor Tour is the Maury Plant from Melbourne tomorrow morning.  Good few people from Poland last weekend have made the long plane trip to Oz.   https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-continental-tour/news/world-olympic-stars-maurie-plant-melbourne
