Surely this is the first time ever that Belgium is leading eventing championships, even if it is a very provisional lead indeed. :d

This is typicall of italian sport, all elite athletes in all sport are member of the defense force ;) Athletes have a financial support and a safety work in future.

but equestrian sports are different, in the sense that this is the only sport where you see our riders competing with their Military Uniform also when they represent the National Team...

 

and this is NOT a good thing...:finger:

 

moreover, you underlined the positive side of our sport system...but there's also the opposite side of that medal...most of those athletes who have their financial situation made safe by the enrollment into the Military Corpse, are just not hungry enough to succeed...

 

I'd really like to see what happens if winning global medals would be the only way to earn their daily bread, instead of not experiencing any difference between a gold and and a 10th place (Olympics apart, where some significant money is at stake for all of our athletes)...

      Let's not act as if these things never happen before. Serbia's cross-country skiing drama a week before the Olympic qualifying for Beijing ended: FIS | Cross-Country Results - Zlatibor (SRB) 2021/2022   Drndic with a DNF, despite being - on paper at least - the best athlete. She didn't just 'not finish', she stepped out barely 50 meters before the finish, because if finishing, the points for her competitor would have been better due to the way points are calculated. Ended up with lots and lots of yelling and screaming and fighting and cursing, DNS the next day and in the end Serbia sent none of them.   This is not a shit move by Canada, this is a fault of the system at most.

      Yes agreed, resetting it would help make it more dramatic as no one would be running away with it. We could also set it that there is a small reward for ranking higher after each round… maybe they start the next round with a “head start” so they bring a few points into the next round? But starting from scratch each round might be cleaner

      I like the concept a lot. My only worry would be that the nations doing the best individually would also end up at the top here as teams are only made up of pairs. Whereas in a bigger team it gives the nations not doing so well individually to have another chance if they are lucky enough to be placed in a good team. Any way we can balance it?

      Nice for them, but also kind of too bad they pick the exact same two as last time. Would have been nice to see Regina Martinez for example (although I'm not sure that would have been logistically possible, depending on how they're going to do the flag bearer thing in the first place).
