Men's Ice Hockey Tournament at the Winter Olympic Games Beijing 2022

Not a salty question at all... But why did we go in 2006 from 14 to 12 teams at the olympics ? Was it the IOC, was it the NHL ?

I believe after 2002 is when the IOC started issuing qualifying standards/quotas for winter sports. I'd guess the drop to 14 was partly to cut quotas and to standardize with all other team sports except soccer.

Which is silly, considering that the winter olympics don't really have a quota problem... They could easily handle the extra teams. Oh well...

Absolutely, now they added two more teams for the womens hockey which is really silly, considering how non competitive it is, instead they easily can add even 4 more teams to the mens tournament, the second tier of this sport is now so even and competitive that it is simply unfair to have only 12 teams in basically one of the only 2 team sports of the whole games (and hockey is arguably the most popular and phare sport of the winter olympics)

Really sad for this french generation esecially Bellemare who will probably never had the chance to represent his country at the games, in other hand the likes of Texier or Roussel can still aim for Cortina.

Even ignoring quotas, the 1998 and 2002 formats sucked. It was especially bad for teams outside the top 6 because they couldn’t get NHL players for the first round.

    ROAD TO BEIJING 2022

    Denmark off to Olympics

    240784812_4457599597595756_7101851078975

75 years is a long time to wait for anything.

Denmark joined the IIHF in 1946, and since then has never reached the Olympic Games. That time is over after the Danes defeated rivals Norway 2-0 in the deciding game of the Final Olympic Qualification Group F tournament, earning their first-ever trip to the pinnacle of international ice hockey.

Forward Frederik Storm scored the game winner and goaltender Sebastian Dahm posted a 26-save shutout against the Norwegians to help drive their team to a historic qualification.

"It's huge," said Storm after the game. "We hav esuch a good group here and we finally managed to succeed adn qualify. I've played in three qualificaiton tournaments and we never made it before, so to do it with this group is amazing."

"I'm just so relieved, we have been chasing this for years," said Dahm.

The game started fast and furious with end-to-end action through the opening period, although no pucks ended up in the net.

The game within the game was without a doubt the goaltending duel between Henrik Haukeland for Norway and Dahm, with neither netminder giving up a score through nearly two periods despite serious pressure at both ends of the ice.

Denmark nearly went down early when Sebastian Dahm’s clearing attempt was intercepted in the Danish zone, giving up a wide-open scoring opportunity that was saved by a diving block from Jesper Jensen Aabo.

At the other end, in the second period Henrik Haukeland had to stand tall on two breakaway opportunities by Denmark to keep the score at 0-0.

But the breakthrough finally came with just over two minutes left in the second period, when Markus Lauridsen spotted the Norwegian defence out of position from his own zone and rifled a pass up to Frederik Storm waiting in the Norwegian end. Storm gained possession and outraced defenceman Erlend Lesund to the goal, beating Haukeland between the legs for the 1-0 lead.

The Danes kept up the offensive pressure in the final frame, while at the other end locking up Norway and preventing the home team from getting any quality scoring chances.

Then it would be their star player Nikolaj Ehlers who would put the game on ice with another breakaway score on a great pass form Frans Nielsen with 3:12 remaining, sending Denmark into the Olympic Games and a new tier of elite ice hockey.

There’s a quota cap on the Winter Olympics, just like there is at the Summer Olympics. The current cap is 2900 quotas.

    100 %.

We had only 12 players from our league in Salt Lake because the NHLers were available only from the 2nd round, our GM however succeded thanks his conections with some NHL GMs to allow players to come for a match and return back to their club, I will never forget Stumpel, Demitra and Palffy after last night NHL game travelling the whole USA the morning, arrive the early evening to Salt Lake, totally exhausted played a match at the Olympics and the same night returned to their NHL team to play the next day there...

We lost all 3 games despite having one fantatsic team but not allowed to play, some guys arrived our last match but could not make it to ice in time, so just were in the stands to see how we lost to Austria and were eliminated...

We were allowed to play with the full team only for the 13th place match against France, we won 7-1 with some 60 shots on goal difference or so...we were so pissed there that the same year we baceame three months later world champions with our full team...the next lobby from our governing bodies helped and in Torino the NHLers were allowed to play during the whole tournament

      • Ok, I have added links to the rules for the team and pairs event in the first post in the thread. Please note, the team and pairs events will only be updated after every 3 juries during the Grand Final.   I am planning to begin the Opening Ceremony at 19:30 GMT tomorrow but if it runs a bit later I will post on thread to let you know. Please don't expect wonders from the opening ceremony. When taking on the organisation I said we will have a slimmed down version of TISC this time as I have been juggling it with Christmas, holidays and now exams too But the main thing was I wanted to get TISC up and running once more after a hiatus of over a year and I'm sure you will agree that's the most important thing and hopefully we will have a fun day together like we usually do.   See you all soon, if you have any questions, let me know!
      • on a podium in pairs for the first time since 1957!
      • Hmm, but where were these people 2 or 3 years ago? They probably don't even know what is a Division 1A at the Hockey World Championships?
      • Is Finoro a significant reinforcement? The rest of the squad is very weak and lost heavily to Great Britain at the last World Championship Div. 1 A. I'm worried about our disaster in Milan in this squad and form  In Turin 2006 it wasn't that bad, but we simply had a stronger team.
      • Pairs Event     The pairs event will kick-off in the second-half of the contest at the beginning of the third session. It will involve nations from the teams eliminated from the team competition after the first 2 sessions.   There will be 8 pairs participating so in addition to the 12 eliminated nations from the team event (13 in the event that the 4 nation team are eliminated), the remaining 3 or 4 places will be awarded to the lowest ranked nations individually who are still in the team event.   All rankings will be taken from the halfway stage (end of session 2).   Pairs will be formed by ranking the 16 participating nations and balancing them as follows: Highest ranked nation of the 16 will be paired with the lowest ranked of the 16. 2nd ranked will be paired with the 15th. 3rd ranked will be paired with the 14th, and so on in this fashion....     The format will mimic a madison cycling event. There will be 6 sprints in total (5 intermediate sprints and a final sprint). The intermediate sprints each will run over the course of 3 rounds of voting. For example:   Sprint 1 (votes from the 18th-20th juries) Sprint 2 (votes from the 21st-23rd juries) Sprint 3 (votes from the 24th-26th juries) Sprint 4 (votes from the 27th-29th juries) Sprint 5 (votes from the 30th-32nd juries)   There will then be a final sprint which will be worth double points and will consider the votes from the 33rd and 34th juries. How sprint points are won?? The 8 pairs will be ranked after each sprint is completed by the following criteria in order of importance:   - total medals won - gold medals won - silver medals won - bronze medals won - points won - highest point value from a single jury   Therefore, the pair that won the most total medals during that sprint will be ranked highest. If there is a tie for total medals, the pair with the most gold wins, then most silvers, then most, bronze medals.   If there is still a tie we then consider how many points the pair won during that sprint.     After each sprint, the highest ranked teams will be awarded points as follows:   - 1st ranked = 5 points - 2nd ranked = 3 points - 3rd ranked = 2 points -4th ranked = 1 point       Bonus points: Pairs will win 5 bonus points every time both pairs win medals from a single jury. Pairs will win 2 bonus points every time both pairs win points from a single jury. Pairs that win 5 bonus points for medal doubles, cannot also claim points doubles in the same vote, i.e. they won't receive 5 and 2 points, they will just receive 5 points.     In the event of a tie in the overall standings after each sprint, the pair that finished highest ranked in the most recent sprint will be ranked higher. Therefore, if there is a tie in the overall standings at the end of the competition, the pair that finished highest in the final sprint will be ranked higher overall.
