Not too often you see Barbados cracking into the top 12 of an Olympic sport world championships

Now that we are left with 12 men and 16 women we can take a closer look at the Olympic quota race. As a reminder the quotas are awarded to the highest ranking nation in the team points rankings (please note the 2022 Games have a lower priority than the team ranking of the 2024 Games so there's a chance the quota may be retroactively reallocated to second place).

On the men's side we have eight nations with at least one active surfer, :AUS :BAR :BRA :INA :JPN :PER :POR :USA . With that said, :BAR and :PER are also mathematically eliminated. :AUS :POR and to a lesser extent :INA likely needs results to go their way, even if they win the individual title.

On the women's side we have ten nations with at least one active surfer, :AUS :BAR :CAN :CRC :FRA :GER :PER :POR :ESP :USA . As with the men, :BAR and :CRC are mathematically eliminated. With one remaining athlete,  :CAN :GER :PER :ESP will have it tough and will definitely need results to go their way along with winning the individual event, especially since :AUS and :FRA have three surfers still in play and the two surfers from :POR and :USA are still in the main bracket.

Crazy tactics going down in the first women's heat of round 5. :POR Bonvalot essentially used her priority to prevent :AUS Fitzgibbons from getting a second run, causing her to drop down to the repechage while her compatriot, :POR Hopkins got penalized due to getting in the way of  :PER Rosas who had priority.

    • Such a nice one for Colturi ! That was fun. It almost looked like a script with the cameras focusing on Colturi a couple of times before her first run and showcasing the potential of youngster and she didn't disappoint.      I hope Colturi skis for Albania forever. So much fun to cheer her with the Albanian flag.    I don't get it why everyone is being so critical of Colturi, you got no right to criticize a personal decision, as most European nations use imported athletes in many sports like wrestling and cheer them on like their.   Would you spend hours criticizing Frank Chamizo for switching to Italy rather than playing for Cuba?

    • It may also be that Ceccerelli saw that the conditions in the Italian youth teams were very poor and that is why she insisted on setting up her own team (the results of young Italian skiers unfortunately confirm this). A private team will always be better than a team with 10-12 skiers with max. 3-4 coaches, a one doctor and a physiotherapist. Colturi is the only skier in her team and she has several coaches, a masseur, a doctor etc. Of course, it costs money, but since the parents are famous and have money + Red Bull got involved. I don't understand why she can't start for Italy again? Red Bull should care more that Colturi starts in Cortina under the Italian flag than the Albanian one + Red Bull, as a brand, always has a bigger sales market in Italy with a population of 60 million than in small Albania. I hope that this can still be reversed by next year. For this we need talks between the federation + Colturi's parents + Red Bull + possibly the Italian Olympic Committee. Colturi may be a skier equal to Brignone or even better in the future. We can't lose her, so we have to do now!
