Canada National Thread

Just got home after a long day trip.  Watched the 4x200 relay, pretty disappointed.  China really came out of nowhere there, huh?  Hopefully they can make up for it in the women's medley.

Disappointment in rowing, too.  I thought both singles had good shots at making the finals, but in the end they weren't even close. A bronze is nice, though.

Two more 4ths!  Man, once they start handing out medals for 4th Canada will take over the world.  Just kidding, then they'll get a bunch of 5ths instead.

Hoping for good results in the pool tonight, not much else going on.  Still a chance for Shady in Judo, though.

In women's rugby 7s Canada lost to :FIJ 26-12... this is extremely ominous.

They should have won, but it's not the end of the world.  They beat the French in 2016 in the quarters, and should beat them tomorrow.  Remember, Canada lost to GB in the groups in 2016 and then beat them for the bronze later on.  Not panicking yet.

Shady is in the bronze medal bout.

Well it'll be an uphill battle against the two time world champion Jorge Fonseca - although he was clearly having an issue with his thumb and looked a bit off in the semi.

Acevedo, Mastromatteo, Savard and Smith - not sure they are trying too hard with it but I hope they make the final.

Well I guess Acevedo has to swim at some point. Seems like a relatively weak lineup, I don't see anyone other than Mastromatteo even having a chance of swimming the finals should Canada qualify.

My speculation is that they are going MMFF, which is the best order, and that the finals lineup should they get there will be Liendo, Mastromatteo, MacNeal and Oleksiak.

I guess K. Smith will swim breaststroke in the women's medley heats (otherwise all women's relays get DQed).

Edit: Thormeyer, not Liendo. Not sure why I thought Liendo won trials in the 100m back...

K. Smith swam the individual event so she doesn't need to swim the medley...that being said the options for the breast aren't great.

My understanding is that it depends if she got to enter the individual event only because she was a relay swimmer already or because she got a FINA B invite. IIRC relay only swimmers can enter individual events where they have the B cut.

    • Greece and Portugal also have winter sports centres - but of course these are not homologated routes for World Cup competitions I have never been to Albania personally, so I don't know the country at all. I have been in southern Croatia, though, and there are mountains there but you definitely can't ski there (I was there in the summer, but it's also impossible in the winter). World cup taking place there only in Zagreb.    In general the case of Colturi and Kostelic is completely different: Colturi has no ties to Albania and Janica Kostelic was Croatian and didn't left their country even though at the beginning of her carrier (and also her brother Ivica) her father had to pay for everything and the federation's support was zero. This only changed later. I imagine that the Kostelic family had offers from other countries (Austria, Switzerland, Italy?) to compete for them, which were much richer (at the beginning of the 21st century Croatia was a very poor country and devastated by war). All the more respect for them because they were true Croatian patriots until the end. I can imagine the Colturi family in a similar situation... Her mother would probably negotiate with half of Alpine Europe for Lara to compete for them Which of course doesn't change the fact that the Italian federation completely gave a shit in this situation. They let such talent go in a situation where they hasn`t a single female athlete on the podium of the World Cup in slalom for a dozen or so years. In the giant slalom it's not much better either, only there the older athletes cloud the picture: Brignone and Bassino. However, behind these two there is absolutely nothing...
    • Atalanta is probably playing the most beautiful football in Europe right now: spectacular and effective. It's nice to watch and they don't have to spend a lot of money for it.   Inter is playing very economically. It's not impressive but it's consistently collecting points. It's also the only team in the Champions League that hasn't conceded a goal this season.   Milan played very poorly yesterday but they won. They have 9 points and are close to qualifying for the play-offs.

    • Unfortunate, but it doesn't change the fact that I'm looking forward to Thursday evening, when the team captain's meeting is over and we have our very first World Cup start list of the season. Always a cool moment to see who's there and everything
