Are they actually looking for reinforcements?  There has to be someone from Germany that has a tie to Slovakia.

I doubt anyone would be interested, First they will have to enter our military forces and then be satisfied with a limited salary in comparison to other countries, here you can only make a living as sportperson assuming you not Olympic or WCh medalist basically only being a decent football or hockey player

I did not know about the requirement to join the military.  That might be an issue.  I was just thinking back to the interwar years when there were lots of Germans spread around the former Austria-Hungarian empire.  I know most were closer to the German border, but maybe some in present day Slovakia ...  Sorry.

Is that an actual obligation if you want to be a Slovak biathlete? :yikes:

Currently the whole NT is. The guys who retired from sport this summer, retired because the club (well basically the ministry of defence) did not extained their contracts because of poor results...

It is in fact Not exactly an obligation, but basically it is unofficially expected that if you want to be a top level athlete representing the country, you should sign with Dukla and thus enter "unofficially-officially" the Slovak Army. Slovakia is kinda an exception in the world sport. Almost 75 % of Slovak top athletes are members of the Slovak Army (under the military Club Dukla Banská Bystrica)

and we are speaking about likes of Petra Vlhová, canoe slalom team etc.. or even the Russian-born wrestlers who are winning for us medals nowadays :p

Spoiler

And speaking about biathlon eventual mercenaries, Even Nastya Kuzmina was and (still is) part of Dukla :p here is the full list (when you will click on biathlon icon you will find the complete list of athletes, and you can see that it is the complete NT)

And this military service, what does it consist of? No way somebody is able to be a full-time military person and also a full-time pro athlete, so they have to do a couple of trainings per year or so, or mostly marketing work?

Obviously no one expect them to be soldiers and do military job or so.. This is a "special unit" :p officially called vojenské športové centrum Military Sporting Section.

they are legally members of the armed forces, employees of the Slovak army, they receive a salary from the Ministry of Defense according to their grade in the army, but their job and content is to train, prepare and do their sports and represent the country on the sports field like all other athletes in the world.

btw did you recognize the guy in the middle of the wrestlers in the fb picture I posted ? if no, a hint: you interviewed him after the 50km race walk win in Rio. He is now the chief commander of the sporting unit :d
