That along with speed skating saw growth as well. And figure skating is always universal in terms of countries participating. Yet only if to get reduced quotas.

Olympic qualification in short track is actually quite harsh. Hungary, who won gold in the relay, qualified eighth out of eight teams for the Olympics.

Medals after 4/11 events in Calgary:

:NED  1 - 1 - 0

:CHN  1 - 0 - 0

:JPN  1 - 0 - 0

:POL  1 - 0 - 0

:CAN  0 - 1 - 1

:KOR  0 - 1 - 1

:HUN  0 - 1 - 0

:ISR  0 - 0 - 1

:RUS  0 - 0 - 1

I love how much this sport has grown in quite a short amount of time. Just 10 years ago the first world cup of the season (Salt Lake City 2008) resulted in the following medal table after all 10 events:

:KOR  6 - 5 - 2

:CHN  4 - 2 - 1

:CAN  0 - 2 - 4

:USA  0 - 1 - 3

To be complete: final medal table after the first World Cup weekend:

:NED 3 - 2 - 1

:CHN 3 - 1 - 1

:HUN 2 - 1 - 1

:RUS 1 - 1 - 1

:JPN 1 - 0 - 0

:POL 1 - 0 - 0

:KOR 0 - 4 - 2

:CAN 0 - 1 - 3

:KAZ 0 - 1 - 0

:ISR 0 - 0 - 1

:FRA 0 - 0 - 1

  • 11 events with 11 different countries winning medals. Much more diversity than many other winter sports. :yes
  • 7 golden medals won by European countries, whereas no golden medals for :KOR and home country :CAN.
  • The first golden medal for :POL and an unexpected golden medal for :JPN:cheer:
  • Also surprised to see :NED on top of the medal table. Can't remember when/if that happened before.

Yep, short track is definitely one of the more diverse winter sports in terms of countries capable of winning medals, even more than speed skating :)

    • Yeah. It was pretty bad that they cancel the contract with the original creative director after 7 months of work. I feel like politics, in this particular context of the changing of prime minister and the cabinet, may had caused changes in organizational decisions regarding the Sea Games including the direction of the opening ceremony.
    • That's what I figured.  Wouldn't be a proper lead up to an Olympics without some media-fueled fearmongering.
