Too lazy to go back to the stream, but did they originally qualify for the final? They're kind of like the exact opposite of the Dutch team: Sonnekalb is definitely the most talented of all the guys in the Gangwon speed skating, whereas he didn't really have an equal female with him, while the Dutch have Daleman as definitely the most talented of all the girls in Gangwon, but she didn't really have an equal male with her :p

Korea surprised me somewhat, but China winning this mixed relay was almost impossible not to happen, Liu is very much in the high end of girls in Gangwon, and Pan is just fantastic :d

Somewhat surprising 1-2 for the Dutch in the girl's mass start today. I mean, Daleman was going to win this and any challenge to that would be kind of surprising, but I had definitely not expected Jasmijn Veenhuis to be on the podium. Very nice for her, I genuinely wondered why they picked her and not Mette ten Cate for the event though - Ten Cate is from 2008, so younger than Veenhuis, but won the 500m, 1000m, 1500m and 3000m (and got mass start bronze, where Veenhuis finished 9th) at the Dutch junior championships two weeks ago, well ahead of Veenhuis every single time.

Meanwhile Sonnekalb of course won the men's mass start, but it was a nice sprint for the medals.

Sonnekalb :GER raced that to near perfection in my opinion (considering his strengths). I still can't figure out what Huber :GER was doing? I think he should have just committed to that move, but it looked like the coaches told him to back off for Sonnekalb (which is lame, since that situation almost certainly benefits him too).

Rodrigues :POR likely got the best result for her NOC at a winter YOG (6th), but I'll check all the NOCs when the Games are finished.

    • Though I did just see that today's race isn't valid for FIS points.
    • Let's not act as if these things never happen before. Serbia's cross-country skiing drama a week before the Olympic qualifying for Beijing ended: FIS | Cross-Country Results - Zlatibor (SRB) 2021/2022   Drndic with a DNF, despite being - on paper at least - the best athlete. She didn't just 'not finish', she stepped out barely 50 meters before the finish, because if finishing, the points for her competitor would have been better due to the way points are calculated. Ended up with lots and lots of yelling and screaming and fighting and cursing, DNS the next day and in the end Serbia sent none of them.   This is not a shit move by Canada, this is a fault of the system at most.
    • Yes agreed, resetting it would help make it more dramatic as no one would be running away with it. We could also set it that there is a small reward for ranking higher after each round… maybe they start the next round with a “head start” so they bring a few points into the next round? But starting from scratch each round might be cleaner
    • I like the concept a lot. My only worry would be that the nations doing the best individually would also end up at the top here as teams are only made up of pairs. Whereas in a bigger team it gives the nations not doing so well individually to have another chance if they are lucky enough to be placed in a good team. Any way we can balance it?
    • I thought about accumulating, but for higher drama it may be reset like in cycling track elimination races
    • Those are the national junior championships, national championships are in Steinkjer, starting tomorrow: FIS | Steinkjer (NOR) - Event Details - Cross-Country
    • Nice for them, but also kind of too bad they pick the exact same two as last time. Would have been nice to see Regina Martinez for example (although I'm not sure that would have been logistically possible, depending on how they're going to do the flag bearer thing in the first place).
