Road Cycling UCI World Championships 2018

Dutch gold is almost a given in women's road cycling these days. Beyond ridiculous when looking at comparative randomness of men's races.

@heywoodu

what is the secret? how your team are good like this? Children probably have very good working conditions?

Expand

Near-perfect generation (Zijland-Van Moorsel was great, Vos was great, but they didn't have a team with 5-6 women all capable of winning a medal), women's cycling being more of a 'thing' than in other countries (not very big, but still), more available money, very poor international strength in women's cycling, and so on.

I think it's mostly a mix of Dutch women's cycling being good and international women's cycling being painfully weak :p

Yes because no country dominates for example men's Grand Tours :p

And we go above 3:24. :cheer:

Possibly biggest winning margin ever.

Expand

Nope, Marsal won by 3:24 in 1990, but a year earlier she lost to Longo by 4:05 :d

Second biggest margin ever.

You're welcome. Tomorrow a world title for Kwiatkowski, Poels, Geoghegan Hart, Stannard, Henao, Henao or Kiriyenka to top it off :p

Van der Breggen finaly gets that rainbow jersey. Long overdue IMO.

It's clear the strenght of the Dutch team enables them to dominate.

What the hell happened with that Deignan though? Since missing those drug tests and barely escaping a ban, she's been struggling for results. Coincidence? ;)

    • is having its general election today.   In a big turnaround, the Liberals lead by Mark Carney are now ahead in the polls, after having been over 20 points behind as recently as December. This is mostly credited to the resignation of Justin Trudeau and America's on and off trade war, along with comments Donald Trump made about Canada becoming the 51st state.   While the Liberals are favoured to win a fourth consecutive election, there is a lot of uncertainty around whether it will be a majority or a minority government. There is also an outside chance of the Conservatives, lead by Piere Poilievre, will form a minority government.
    • Ukraine has made progress recently and lost yesterday on penalties to the UK, but that still doesn't explain why the Italian team isn't making any progress. We are sitting in a lower division for 3 years and that's with a ban for Rus and Blr. New and great coaches are being brought in and it's not giving any results. 8-10 years ago we were regularly playing in the highest division, every 2 years and that was with a much stronger teams (Russia and Belarus were there). I don't know where the problem is.

    • Many things, probably they thought it is already over and the win will come itself... but also Nitra improved their play a lot, they outplayed us in physicality in the last 2 games, they won almost every duel. Was hard to watch. Anyway I am still persuated we will finish the job at home with success on Tuesday
    • If you look at their results this season and on the Super Series, it’s not really that surprising.    I’d consider them to be medal contenders.
    • At one point it seemed we were making good progress in this sport, but in the past 1-2 years things seem to have hit a standstill..   Ivaylo Ivanov is still our only elite judoka, but he is passing 30. There were/are some promising youngsters, but they haven't been able to make a jump to the senior level. At this Euro we barely had any first round wins (not including Ivanov). In fencing and taekwondo the results are much more visible for us.
    • yes, but that's only an (important) episode... I mean, what's up with your team more in general...it looks like they got the classic "fear to win", they're not as brilliant as they were in the early games of the series
