Still a nice result, a win is a win :p the more important fact is that At least there someone behind Ninis for the future who may be able to compete in the world cup.

well, you already have a good young man (Jakub Simonak), who was 11th in the Nations Cup and then 27th in the World Cup race in Innsbruck ("only" 4 positions and half a second behind Ninis)...

and also a promising double (Tomas Vavercak and Matej Zmij), who were 5th in the Nations Cup and then 13th in the World Cup race (always in innsbruck)...

and in the Austrian WC stage, there was also a girl (Andrea Pavlikova) at the start, even if she didn't get as good results as the guys (she was only 35th out of 38 starters in the Nations Cup)...

so, the situation for Slovak Luge sport is not so dark as you could think (OK, the top positions are still far away...and maybe they will never get close to that...but at least you already have a full set of world cup level lugers...and maybe in Beijing you'll have a chance to start also in the team event)...;)

  • 4 weeks later...

Dominik Fischnaller, Andrea Voetter and Ludwig Rieder/Patrick Rastner are the Italian champions in their respective category for the 2018/2019 season...

Dominik won a close race with a 0.1 sec margin over his cousin Kevin in the men's single; Andrea won the women's single with a wider margin (over 2/10 of a second) over the young Verena Hofer (Nina Zoeggeler ended up in 5th place); Rieder & Rastner won the doubles' competition, which turned out to be the most exciting of the entire day, with only 17/1000 of a second advantage over the youth world champions, Ivan Nagler/Fabian Malleier (and also Emanuel Rieder/Simon Kainzwaldner, who ended up in 3rd place, were very close, just 61/1000 of a second outside the winning time)...

p.s. the races were held in Oberhof (GER) as in Italy we're still without a track (even a modest one, good just for a few national races)...:wall:

for Italy, in the girls' race, very disappointing outcome for Verena Hofer, who lost a very much anticipated gold medal because of a very poor 1st run...

meanwhile the bronze medal won by Lukas Gufler among the boys has to be considered a good result...

let's see what happens tomorrow in the doubles' race, with another chance for Italy (namely, Gufler and Felderer) to get some satisfaction in this really shady winter for our luge sport...

Vaverčák/Zmij always close of the podiums like it was at the Youth Olympics or at the European championships last month, this time again very close, nice 5th place.

and the Junior World Champs end with the local team (Austria) winning the Team Relay, thus spoiling the German party and avoiding the clean sweep by the guys from North of the Border...

Germany ended up the team race in second place and Russia in 3rd...

Italy had another shameful moment when Alex Gufler, already losing a lot of time since the start of his stint, made a big mistake and blew all of our chances away with a depressing DNF...:facepalm::wall:

    • need to work on the celebrations... or just drop them?   Btw, these jerseys suck and I remember Zambia playing in all white with red numbers. At least they have orange on national flag but still...
    • British Columbia in general and Vancouver in particular are awesome and it’s great more people got to discover it thanks to Vancouver 2010.
    • And of course the British being famous for curmudgeons, there were always plenty of curmudgeons to quote.  Then of course from the opening ceremony and the cycle race on the very first morning it was obviously going to be triumph, so everyone just shut up for a while.
    • Yep, the amount of emergency services I heard at some point was a little extreme (for our little town), so I checked what was going on and saw they were all being called to a specific location. Until then I thought maybe it was part of a parade of trucks and agricultural vehicles that was on it's way from the next town over, decorated with lights and stuff.   Since I knew it was on the parade route, I was sure one of those big vehicles had hit people somehow (there were, besides the many vehicles, also two helicopters on the way, meaning it certainly wasn't about a single victim).   We picked our bikes and went to take a look, absolutely chaos in the area. Never saw so many services combined together, fire trucks from 20km away, ambulance after ambulance came racing by, people frantically trying to make way for them (the roads weren't really closed yet).   While there we heard someone who had been close say that the parade hadn't arrived yet and what seemed to have happened was that a car from the other side came onto the roundabout and simply never turned. "It's a massive drama over there, unbelievable", he said.   Quite quickly rumours started spreading of course, the first one turned out to be true: a middle aged (local) woman was behind the wheel and seems to have become unwell. Local security camera showed the car going at high speed right before the roundabout.   Plenty of rumours going around in terms of who were involved of course, and people keeping each other up to date to see if they know this or that family and such...   Never expected my little town to be big news in the Netherlands, even including some breaking broadcasts, live reporters and everything, damn. By far the biggest thing to happen here in my memory

    • For me, these were very good Olympics, and British sport benefited greatly from them, and is still benefiting. I fear it will be much worse here. Canada also benefited very good on Vancouver 2010 – this is very good see in the medal standings of subsequent Winter Games after 2010 and earlier.
    • Nobody hates Britain more than the British media so… I recall it being quite a pessimistic tone before the London games started.
    • I'm curious what was written before London 2012? Did they attack their own country, or did they just keep quiet?

    • Very true point.  Although I think at this point everyone is just holding their collective breath until the test event.  The NHL isn't going to rage anymore until then because it's not like that would make the arena progress go any quicker
