Open Water Swimming at the Aquatics LEN European Championships 2018

The open water swimming starts today with the 5k's in freaking awesome Loch Lomond

Spoiler

I saw there's a marathon swimming thread, but today are the 5k's and that's quite simply not marathon swimming, so that thread definitely isn't the place for it.

I would sort of laugh my balls of in a bit of a cruel way if it turns out everyone was wrong about the Loch Ness Monster and one actually shows up in Loch Lomond during today's races.

unfortunately the weather conditions are not ideal...water is expected to be only around 13/15 degrees (which means that the swimmers will be allowed to wear the full "heavy" bodysuit)...

and this will probably influence also the final results...

the swimming marathon thread is dedicated to the world series (with all races over 10k), so this is the right thread for the open water swimming events at the european championships...

however, I hope there will be some tv coverage (and for open water swimming my best chance is my "beloved" rai, our public TV :yikes::facepalm::cry:)...

p.s. by the way, Loch Lomond used to be also the site of the Golf Scottish Open until a few years ago (when they started to use only the socalled "links" kind of courses, meanwhile Loch Lomond is a wonderful "parkland" kind of course)...

Loch Ness is up north (close to the city of Inverness)...;)

really stupid tactical mistake by the Italian girls...they allowed Van Rouwendaal and Beck to swim away from the rest of the field since the beginning of the race...and now they can't catch them anymore...:wall:

    • There will be specialized double sculls...just not for an NOC if it is entering singles specialists.   Either enter 2 singles specialists, or 1 XD specialist pair.   But they can in theory compete in both events, I guess, if they qualify...our top M, I think, does both.   But there are 17M, 17W, and 30 Pairs allotted in the quota, so I don't think the intent is that every singles entry will be in doubles.   (Perhaps this gets to fall in line with Weightlifting, where due to max entry quota, an NOC can't enter in every event, even if they have the best athletes...here, unless you have a pair who qualifies in both.)

    • I read the Olympic qualification documents for weightlifting. A country can have the opportunity to send a maximum of 4 athletes in one gender, but the conditions are very strict.
    • world champion Jessica Schilder opened her season up with 19.78 in France.
    • wait! what???   so, there won't be specialized double sculls, but those boats would have to feature 2 single specialists if a Nation wants to enter 2 proper singles M+W??? tell me I misread the expalaination...
