Athletics WA World Championships 2022

I haven't posted in this topic since the World Championships started, so just some :GRE recap:

1. Tentoglou winning silver was a bit strange, we got so used to him winning gold all the time

He had the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th best jumps of the competition, but in the end even he said "it would be a disgrace to win gold with only 8.32m"

He also would've held all 5 (Olympic, World outdoor and indoor, European outdoor and indoor) titles at once, but he will have another chance next year to do this hopefully!

2. 38 yo Drisbioti finishing 4th in 35km is really amazing. She quit athletics from a young age to go to university, then came back in her late 20s, made the Rio Olympics, then finished top 8 in Tokyo and now is going for Paris too. The Hellenic Olympic Committee didn't even sponsor her after her 8th place finish in Tokyo because she is "too old," so she works full-time at her family's tavern and trains after midnight when the tavern closes. Also she broke her national record by almost 6 minutes, although as we know it's a new event so probably not as impressive as it sounds.

3. Stefanidi 5th in women's pole vault was disappointing but not surprising. I mean I thought it would've been worse to be honest. Although 4.70 was a SB for her, hopefully she can medal at the European Championships (where she is two-time defending champion), but she has really been a shadow of her former self since the pandemic. Also we had a streak of 3 consecutive medals in the women's pole vault at the World Championships (Kyriakopoulou bronze 2015, Stefanidi gold 2017, Stefanidi bronze 2019), so now that has come to an end as well

4. Frantzeskakis finishing 9th in the men's hammer was very respectable considering his young age. Hopefully the first of many big finals for him.

5. Very disappointing that Tzengko (women's javelin) missed out on the final as she was one of the best in the world this year, but still she is only 19 so hopefully she can be more consistent in the future. Stamatia Scarvelis (women's hammer) missing the final was a big shock, as she only threw 67.20 which was by far her worst of the year, meanwhile she was over 70m in 6 different competitions this year.

6. Disappointing but not surprising that Karalis, Karydi, Kyriakopoulou and Polak missed out on their finals. All have been in horrible form. Kyriakopoulou is 36 so I guess at this point her goal is to make it to Paris 2024 and then retire. The others had some injury problems but are younger (especially Karalis and Karydi) so I expect more from them.

7. Lastly, bittersweet that Tatiana Gusin couldn't make the final of the women's high jump. She came so close and that would've been a pleasant surprise.

    • For the summary and lowlights of Thailand's preparation in hosting the ongoing Sea Games, I kindly suggest those who are interested to read from this English language article from Thai media outlet, Thai Enquirer: https://www.thaienquirer.com/63469/thailands-sea-games-2025-under-fire-budget-management-and-technical-controversies/
    • It's all hogwash especially in the short attention span generation. Like nobody cares about Free Tibet anymore either. Free Palestine will last a lot longer due to Saudi Arabia becoming a sponsorship force in sports.   Israel is too weak in soccer to qualify from UEFA zone. The only time they qualified was from the Asian zone and they only beat Australia & New Zealand who were complete nobodies in the 1960s. No such luck in the 60 years since.
    • Oh I assure you FIFA dodger a bullet with Israel not qualifying…   But ya that’s kind of the thing, shut up and dribble is a mantra anti LGBT people have used often. I don’t think it’s hypocritical to remind them of their position
    • Ah, yes but that's not how pro athletes are taught in North America these days? Shut up & dribble is xenophobic, racist or whatever? The hypocrisy of some of these policies were exposed during 2022 World Cup already where the Saudis played it smart and waved their own "Free Palestine' slogans. Forget LGBT rights for a moment, how many 'Free Palestine' flags will be waved in 2026? Or will those be confiscated by default? Somehow I feel this won't be met with similar backlash when China clamped down on 'Free Tibet' in 2008 OG. Saudi Arabia is more important to global markets than Iran & Egypt
    • Wisła Płock just assumed 1st position after five consecutive draws. Must be first time ever a team on a five match winless streak actually moves up to league top.
    • Well ya, which is why the Egyptian and Iranian teams can shut up and dribble :P
    • The problem is, the World Cup is not a local event. Overall it's another storm in a teacup. LGBT rights in Muslim countries won't change a damn inch becuse of one soccer match in Seattle
    • After looking at the entry list of athletes in the official website, I've changed some of my predictions in the Olympic events with these changes:   Total Tally: Thailand 87, Singapore 51, Vietnam 48, Indonesia 33, Philippines 24, Malaysia 22, Cambodia 1     Badminton (5): Malaysia 2, Thailand 1, Singapore 1, Indonesia 1   Men’s Singles: Switched from Thailand to Singapore     Boxing (11): Thailand 8, Philippines 2, Vietnam 1   Men: -54 kg (-55 kg): Thailand, -60 kg: Thailand, -63.5 kg (-65 kg): Thailand, -69 kg (-70 kg): Thailand, -80 kg: Philippines   Women: -50 kg (-51 kg): Thailand, -54 kg: Thailand, -57 kg: Thailand, -60 kg: Vietnam, -66 kg (-65 kg): Thailand, -70 kg: Philippines     Sailing (7): Thailand 4, Singapore 2, Malaysia 1   ICLA 6: Switched from Thailand to Malaysia     Taekwondo (8): Thailand 6, Vietnam 2   -67 kg: Switched from  Vietnam to Thailand     Weightlifting (5): Thailand 2, Philippines 1, Indonesia 1, Malaysia 1   Men: -65 kg: Malaysia, -94 kg (-95 kg): Thailand   Women: -53 kg: Thailand, -69 kg: Philippines, -77 kg: Indonesia   * I saw that they have actually change the weight categories to almost match that of IWF newly introduced categories from several months ago.      Wrestling (12): Vietnam 7, Philippines 3, Indonesia 2   Men's Freestyle: -57 kg: Philippines, -65 kg: Vietnam, -74 kg: Vietnam, -86 kg: Philippines Men's Greco-Roman: -67 kg: Indonesia, -77 kg: Vietnam, -87 kg: Indonesia, -97 kg: Vietnam Women's Freestyle: -50 kg: Vietnam, -53 kg: Vietnam, -57 kg: Vietnam, -62 kg: Philippines
