:GEO (5) & :COL (4) among the men + :CHN & :USA (5) among the women are the only Nations exceeding the 3 quota places in the 5 weight classes so far, all the remaining Countries have no more than 3 men and 3 women currently in qualifying position (I'm only counting the top 10 ranked lifters for the global World spots, not the Continental quota places yet).

looking at the world champs results, I guess that :CHN would eventually give up the -59Kg and the -71kg among the women. :mumble:

No Greeks in any of these lists...

It can be the first time since 1964 that Greece doesn't qualify anyone in weightlifting. Such a shame considering how good we were in this sport not too long ago, although it is not surprising as the interest in this sport is very low and other sports have more favourable reputations in our country for various reasons...

Anyways we were barely hanging on to this qualification streak as we had only 1 weightlifter in London, Rio, and Tokyo. Iakovidis was in Rio and Tokyo but I don't think he'll be able to make it to Paris, hopefully I'm wrong.

Our best chance is 22 yo Sofia Georgopoulou in the women's 59kg:

Georgopoulou had 192kg as her best result of 2021 and 204kg in 2022, so hopefully she can keep making progress as she is probably close already. We also have 21 yo Maria Kardara in this same category who lifted 191kg this year (she had 182kg in 2021, 167kg in 2019, 137kg in 2017), so both are improving with each year.

if we had this qualification system for Tokyo Sohrab Moradi had his 2nd Olympic gold around his neck, he broke the WR by a huge margin inside the qualification period yet that wasn't enough for him since he got injured later, that super weird complicated system forced to come back despite not being fully recovered, he re-injured himself and then again re-injured himself. (still he would had been in Tokyo after some late withdrawals but our federation wasn't smart enough to leave a place vacant for him just in case)

now for 2024 the path is clear for Iran Weightlifting, the goal is to qualify in heavier 3 weights and 3 Iranians are already in top 4 in these weights. I think those records are probably enough to qualify at the end. it's mostly internal competitions to see who will get the quota. I believe Rostami and Davoudi will go to Paris eventually but Dehdar (who won silver in Bogota) is probably #3 behind Motamedi and Moradi. Moradi didn't feel he is ready for competition yet and Motamedi (2021 World Champion) got injured in a stupid league competition 2-3 weeks before the World Championship  I wonder how many countries have a "Weightlifting league" :hairpull: that's stupid. that's too many unnecessary competitions in such a tough sport. that's probably why half of our team is always injured.

:LTU Sidiskis listed twice in Men's +102kg category.

But with different results... probably because he gets one in WC and the other one in European...

That's a new update from IWF. They released a "long list", where they are considering all categories and more than one athlete from each country.

I don't know if it was a mistake by them, or they've added him twice intentionally

    • Unfortunate, but it doesn't change the fact that I'm looking forward to Thursday evening, when the team captain's meeting is over and we have our very first World Cup start list of the season. Always a cool moment to see who's there and everything
    • Today I unpacked some of the boxes in which we have put my way too many books to move to our house, and I came across these beauty's I hadn't seen for a while     Absolutely recommended, tough to get for a decent price, but they are such an interesting read with lots of very interesting little stories! Still looking for at least 1900, 1904 and 1906, but not really in the right moment to spend money on that now, so the wait goes on
    • Which I guess is part of why unfortunately 'our' first wild card attempt of the season was rejected last week
    • The next chapter in the Krasnobaeva saga is upon us.   Looks like  Armenia have cut ties with her after only a few weeks. A person from their Federation has said, that they won't continue the relationship, because of her unprofessional and rude attitude towards the coaches and other officials. That includes: - having no respect to the coaches and their advise; - training without any motivation; - stops doing the routine and throws objects without any reason; - just lays on the floor and ignores the music.   When this was escalated with her mother, she mentioned that "Elvira has a strong temper and she was the same in Bulgaria and they tolerated her". Which of course is complete BS. If anyone attempted this shit here, they would be thrown out immediately.   And now  are wanting from her mother to return all finances they gave them, which she is refusing, so they will probably sue them. They will also inform other RG Federations about this situation, so they don't hire them.   My 2 cents on this is most likely Krasnobaeva was happy in BG and was forced out by her mother, so now she is sabotaging the move and be done with it.
    • Honestly Ruka is my favourite World Cup event of the whole season. Everybody is there. Later on there is always someone who skips one weekend or another . Not everybody takes part in Tour de ski. But here everyone shows up.
