5 (including those entered in the specific individual event) + those who are already entered in other events, relays individual (200m, 400 hurdles) can be added, so many countries can reach 7 or even more.

Well, then it seems that 8 is still tops. In this case, the heat squad and final squad would be totally different..... I think the US always included one very strong runner in order to make sure they can actually make it to the final 😁😁

6 Swedish athletes (five from athletics and one sailor) started a GoFundMe to take the Swedish Olympic Committee to CAS. Backed by a professor in law they mean that the Swedish olympic committes decision to not let these (and a few more) qualified athletes go to the olympics is not compliant with the IOC charter.
They need 400 000 SEK and have so far (starter today) 56 000.

I guess if they somehow would succeed, it would also be important for many british (probably others too) athletes in the same situation.

I wish them luck and hopefully with a positive outcome it would help put an end to these awful cases of athletes being stopped from going to the Olympics when they have met the official qualifying criteria.

Call me selfish, but if that means more Canadian athletes get in then I’m all for a negative outcome :p:dunno:

Really do feel bad for these athletes though.

Irish athletes have benefited from reallocations as well (though we have also rejected quotas in the past too) and while it is nice to receive a bonus of another athlete qualified, I really hope some time soon the IOC introduce some sort of rule that binds NOCs to accept all athletes who qualified by right unless the athletes were in breach of rules, etc.

Wishful thinking but would love to see that happen in the true spirit of the Olympic principles.

These cases do occasionally break for 'the athletes' in ways you don't expect, and the Swedish/British case is pretty sympathetic - even more so considering a fair number of GB swimmers have the Olympic time but not the special Aquatics GB time, and others who have been picked have been denied individual swims - they too, presumably, would suddenly have a case. As would all the South Africans, Kiwis and aussies who have their continental places turned down.

My gut says Olympic bylaws make it clear that NOCs have discretion to insist on their own criteria and IOC will back that discretion. Unless CAS feel very strongly that the Swedes (and by extension Brits) have seriously overcooked their singular superiority to the point of robbing athletes of a sensible chance - for example, they may say that a blanket refusal on rankings places is not aceptable, and that they have to consider rankings invites in the top say 66% of the field.

Personally, I send everyone who qualifies - qualifying is, of itself, a hell of an achievement.

Would have a big knock on on the tendency of South Africa, Australia and New Zealand to turn down continental places.

    • I remember when I was a child and I was on holiday with my parents in Tunisia, I think in 1999? We were on a trip to the desert near the border with Algeria. The guide said something like that: Algeria is a few minutes from here but we won't go there because there is a war going on there and it's not safe.
    • Netanyahu is bad but unfortunately Hamas helps him maintain power. Every attack they make is a reinforcement of Netanyahu's rhetoric about the country's security, etc. In the fall of 2023, Netanyahu was already losing support and then suddenly a big Hamas attack on a festival near the Gaza Strip. Coincidence? It wouldn`t surprise me at all if Netanyahu knew about the plan for this attack but did nothing so that he would then have the tools to maintain his power. I also remember Ariel Sharon - he was probably even more radical than Netanyahu but he had a brain hemorrhage and fell into a coma.
    • Ah yes, post-colonial bickering never gets too old. Let me grab my popcorn!   Netanyahu is on a personal revenge mission to avenge his brother's death for his entire political life and people still act like they're surprised by his actions
    • MId-1962.  Almost all the Jews were driven out in a few days, even though they had been living there since Classical, pre-Muslim times.   Perhaps our friend could give us details of of any current Algerian plans to welcome them back, restore their property, guarantee their safety etc etc?
    • In what year did Algeria free itself from French influence? 1960, exactly?
    • Or better, perhaps he'd like to tell us what happened to the 140,000 Jews who were living in Algeria in 1960, as against the 200 who live there now?
    • There are still many people of Jewish origin in Central and Eastern Europe who have nothing to do with the state of Israel. What ties does Zelensky have to the state of Israel? Apart from he waś there as president of Ukraine and speaking in the Knesset? Nothing. In the power circles in Moscow there were/are many people of Jewish origin and what about that? A large part of the power apparatus of the USSR was based on Jews, especially in the years shortly after WWII.   Instead of constantly writing about Jews, would be better to tell me which country Algeria has better diplomatic relations with: Tunisia or Egypt?
    • Handy guide for the perplexed.
    • I`m a bit disappointed with the starts of the Italian team. I was counting on progress from last year. And here it looks like Bagnis is still very uneven. In Cortina there will be 3 competitions with medals to win and it would be a shame not to use our track to win 1-2 medals. The same goes for luge.
    • On the other hand Errani's serve doesn't make Paolini's task any easier... But Paolini is in a such good shape here, though, that I hope she wins her first title in the old Fed Cup. For Errani, it will be 4: 2009, 2010, 2013. So far, Roberta Vinci has 4 titles with Italy.
