These minor teams have really improved. The Czechs have barely beaten Austria twice and now Germany. And Denmark here too.

Do we know if Britain have played any games against Championship teams yet?

Well, minor teams are not longer minor, nowadays ice hockey is completely different of the sport we knew decades before. Now it´s more athletic, the goalies are bigger (size and eqipements) the shoot-outs are slightly but surely becoming a natural ending of matches.

The problem for GB is that they have limited options to search for a exhibition game opponent, they are not part of the Euro Hockey Challenge project (CZE FIN, RUS, SWE, GER, SUI, SVK, NOR, DEN, FRA, LAT and AUT), so they can not play thse exhibition games (the same apply this year also for Italy) both are thus forced to play each other if they want some top division teams test games, and they will do that in 3 friendly matches between them this week in Coventry, GB willl then face some clubs opponents and before the WCh they will play against SVK after their arrival here.

USA and CAN are also famous for their "on purpose" lack of test maches, they usually arrive to Europe only a couple of days before the tournament and play 1 or 2 matches 2 or 3 days before the tournament just to recognize a bit the europeans biggers rink

Some interesting NHL names that already accepted the invitations of their National Teams for the Wch

Already 11 NHLers confirmed their participation for :SWE in Slovakia this May !!! Loui Eriksson from Vancouver will also play at the Worlds, The reigning champions can also count on the help of Elias Petersson and Jacob Markstrom (both from Vancouver as well) Erik Gustafsson and Marcus Kruger (Chicago) Adam Larsson (Edmonton) Robert Hägg (Philadelphia) Adrian Kempe (LA Kings) Mario Kempe and Oliver Ekman-Larsson (Arizona) and Jesper Bratt (New Jersey)

In other hand Rickard Gronborg received negative answers from Mika Zibanejad (NY Rangers) Hampus Lindholm, Rickard Rakell or Jakob Silfverberg (Anaheim)

:RUS will be again strong as hell, among others another huge world super star will play in Bratislava/Košice this May Yevgeni Malkin (Pittsburgh) apparently will accept the invitation, The Russian team is already filled with the likes of the goalie Alex Georgiev , defencers Ilia Lyubushkin, Yegor Yakovlev, Ivan Provorov or forwards Ilia Kovalchuk, Artem Anisimov, Vladislav Namestnikov and Yevgeni Dadonov

:CAN and USA teams are not entirely named yet, but we already know that Canada will play for example with the rising star Sam Reinhart (Buffalo) or Thomas Chabot (Ottawa) or the Philadelphia this season 91.7% goalie Carter Hart.

:CZE has so far 3 players from NHL in their roster, Jakub Voráček (Philadelphia) being the biggest star, then Radko Gudas and Filip Chytil from the NY Rangers already accepted the invitation, in other hand the young rising star Pavel Zácha from New Jersey refused the invitation...

from the bottom ranked teams interesting to mention that also :AUT has already it´s 1st NHL reinforcement, Michael Raffl (Philadelphia) accepted the invitation and will help our south-west neighbors at the world champs.

Alexander Barkov will not play for :FIN at the Worlds, Florida Panthers refused to let him go to Slovakia, because of not favorable exit medical tests.

Finland can count on the help of 2 NHLers only so far, the Chicago Blackhawks blueliner Henri Jokiharju and Barkov´s teammate from Florida the forward Juho Lammikko. + they will have the AHL team Rockford IceHogs goalie Kevin Lankinen

128 points, which is the highest score since Mario Lemieux in the 1995/1996 season (that year super-Mario scored 161 points...but it was another Hockey)...

after that, Jaromir Jagr scored 127 points in 1998/1999 and Joe Thornton 125 in 2005/2006...in the last few years, the winner of the Art Ross Trophy usually was around 105/108 points (if not less, Jamie Benn won the top scorer's award with only 87 points in 2014/2015, negative record in the modern era for a full 82-game season)...

    • Good point! I had totally forgot about that. And back in 2022 we still had national threads instead of clubs, so we have surely had a huge increase of replies in club's threads comparing to the old national threads (and the Canadian club was the most active one by far).   Nice to see the forum is in a good shape and let's now focus on summer sports with the LA28 qualifications starting very soon
    • @Finnator123 Therefore, for my own sanity, I'm pretending we beat you guys on Saturday.
    • So, time for a recap! Hopefully there's still someone in this thread.   First of all, these Olympics were spectacular from the very beginning. Ever since the opening ceremony kicked things off, I felt something big was happening. Such a global event and a celebration of sports couldn't have been set in a better location this year. It's great to have the winter edition in Europe once again. Wonderful sceneries and great venues just fueled the atmosphere. I really enjoyed switching from one event to another, admiring the landscapes, just like every other Olympics.   The mascots were amazing. They're so adorable. I'm not really an avid collector of Olympic memorabilia, but I feel like I have to get my hands on one of these plushies. Not saying the last mascot was bad, but these stoats are perfect in every sense. The opening sequence rocks, the tune has been stuck in my head for days, it's really catchy. It gives off this dramatic vibe while still keeping a classy coating.   Interesting medal table this year! Norway showed up once again. Honestly, Klæbo, you're mad. I'm pretty sure the guy would place in the top ten of the leaderboard if he competed by himself, absolute legend. Both the United States and France recorded their best ever campaigns, very impressive. Some other countries locked in as well, unfortunately, some did not.   That brings me to a more subjective review.     What do we have here? It's not really pleasant to look at, but that's something we all expected. The last Summer Olympics were supposed to be successful, we had plenty of medal hopes before the start. That one was a disappointing campaign. This time, it wasn't that surprising.   Just as expected, not a lot to be cheerful about. However, I always try to pick something positive. Even these Olympics brought us some successful and memorable stories. There's definitely stuff to go through:   Alpine skiing: This is one of the memorable stories. Petra's comeback is already a victory on its own. It's even more symbolic when you realise the slopes of the Italian Alps marked her return to competitive skiing. Not a disappointing finish from her at all, she even improved her result in the second slalom run. Biathlon: Now this is the sport I'm closely following during the entire year. Well, to say it was disappointing is an understatement. No individual finish in the top twenty is a disaster. No matter how we look at it, it's a failure, especially after all the promising things we've heard during the last few races, building up to the main part of the season. I'm not saying I expected medals, but the results are horrific from every angle. Paula not being able to shoot with less than three misses just sums up the hopelessness of Slovak biathlon in Antholz this year. The women's relay also didn't live up to the expectations. Disappointing. Figure skating: Adam Hagara is the first male competitor to reach the final round since Nagano. Very impressive. Despite not improving afterwards, it's a great debut for him. His time will definitely come, it will be interesting to watch him skate in four years from now. Ice hockey: Now this is where it gets interesting. Again, there wasn't much to expect from us at the Olympics this year compared to the past, but I definitely did not expect hockey to be our best shot at a medal. And what a ride it was! No matter how easy our path to the semifinal was compared to other teams, we rightfully earned it down to the last detail. Damn, winning a group with Sweden and Finland at the best tournament in twelve years feels like a dream. Absolutely surreal. If only we could change the outcome of the last weekend, it was disappointing, although definitely not as painful as Vancouver was, @hckošice definitely remembers that one better than me. In all seriousness, I'm glad we didn't disappoint, fourth place is a pleasant shock, something no one in Slovakia or outside the country predicted to happen. I suppose we know how to move the puck, we don't suck as much as we used to. Ski jumping: This is what I'm looking forward to. I know pretty much nothing about this sport outside of the basics, but Hektor Kapustík looks so promising. He's already reached several milestones of Slovak ski jumping in the last couple of months. I'm very excited to see what the future brings, he's definitely got the potential. I can picture myself watching him being a serious medal contender in a few years, the kid has wings. Ski mountaineering: I don't know, this whole sport was very anti-climatic. Not sure if it's because of the events happening almost at the end, the execution being pretty disappointing, or our athletes being unlucky, that's a Slovak classic. Just as I thought, we could have had a serious medal contender in the women's event if it wasn't for snow getting in the way. Stuff happens.   Other sports didn't really stand out.   There should be a big warning sign coming out of these Olympics for Slovakia. The brightest of our hopes did not come from a working state-sponsored system of support. They had to rely on their families and self-sacrifice plenty of times. There's not much support for young talents, nepotism and corruption are prioritised instead. I know that's something happening not only in Slovakia. Many countries suffer because of this, but it's still not something to be proud of.   To end with something more positive, our hockey future is so bright and I'm really excited to watch these young guys improving as time goes by. We've had the youngest squad on average, many of those players are eligible for multiple Olympic tournaments, including the World Championships we're hosting in three years. If these players are already the core of the team in their early twenties, we can only imagine how much glory they can bring in a few years. Finally, it looks like Slovak hockey is not getting worse. Let's keep it that way.

    • It's somewhat surprising that figure skating isn't more popular here.
    • I'm not against team events or even mixed team events, but I think they need to be more than the sum of individual performances. So relays are fine (including team event in luge), team pursuit too, team event in skeleton is ok cause you have this different type of start though I would prefer the luge system (with a chip instead of this board you definitely can't touch in skeleton ?). Rest needs to be rethought at least. And rules need to be coherent between the sports regarding how many teams you can enter, why is it 4 duos in alpine combined event and only 1 in CC team sprint ? 2 would be my limit for dual events, even in sports where they usually don't enter more than one team in WC events.    Alpine skiing (10)   No changes.   Biathlon (11 -> 9)   - Mixed relay + Single mixed relay. Agree with De_Gambassi, different format from the gender relays, increased chances for weaker nations to compete even if we would have two teams for some countries. - Both pursuits. I've seen several people complain about how tired the athletes were by the end of the Games during the mass-starts. Thing is these are the same people that are adamant on keeping the pursuit in the program. Either ditch them or treat the sprint as a qualification round. You would then have one individual races, one MS and one "exciting" double-event.   Bobsleigh (4)   No changes. Max 2 teams per country.   Cross-country skiing (12 -> 11)   - Both team sprints. + Mixed team sprint.  Same idea as in biathlon. Like some I'm all for a real sprint and not the dull attrition races we witnessed in Val di Fiemme. Freestyle is mandatory, can be uphill/downhill but not longer than 1'30.  - 50km W + 30km W   Curling (3)     No changes.     Figure skating (5 -> 3)   - Team event.  Awful ranking system. - Ice dance.  "Dance", enough said.   Freestyle skiing (15)   - Team aerials. + Ski-cross mixed event. Ideally luge-like with immediate start after your teammate crossed the finish line. Alternate M-W order between the rounds. In snowboard cross men were almost useless all day long.   Ice hockey (2)   No changes.   Luge (6)   No changes.   Nordic combined (3 -> 4)   + Gundersen NH W - Gundersen NH M + Mass-start LH M - Team event + Mixed team event   Short-track speed skating (9)   No changes.   Skeleton (3)    No changes.   Ski jumping (6 -> 5)   - Super team M   Ski mountaineering (3)   - Both sprints + Both individuals   Snowboarding (11)   No changes.   Speed skating (14)   - Mass-start in the current format is shite + (Re)introduce an allround competition inspired by track cycling's omnium (first version). So a couple of individual races (500 and 3000 ?), an elimination race, a points races to end it.  (-) This would be endurance based so maybe ditch 3000/5000.
    • Worth noting that these Olympics, there were separate qualification and event threads where as in the past, they were merged together in one thread so that makes the increase in replies even more impressive.
