The most successful Olympic sport of the country.

Slovakia participated at every single Olympics and won 14 medals in this sport since the independence (8 Golds - 3 Silvers - 3 Bronzes)

which rank the nation to 1st place in the historic all-time Canoeing Slalom Olympics medal tally. Slovakia is also the all-times record holder in the now inexisting M C2 class with 4 golds & 1 bronze (3 Golds in a row by the Hochschorner Brothers is still one of the biggest Olympic achievements not only in Slovak sport)

In addition, Slovakia holds also a respectable record streak, the country has won a medal in the C1 men in all its participations since independence

(1996 Gold, 2000 Silver & Bronze, 2004 Silver, 2008 Gold, 2012 Bronze, 2016 Silver)

Only one time happened that Slovakia did not qualify in all events for the Olympics, paradoxically it happened at the most successful games in Beijing 2008, when Slovakia won 3 gold medals out of 3 events, we sadly failed to qualify for the M K1 there.

This time again Slovakia qualified in all events, the full possible team of 4 athletes (2M + 2W) the delegation will include two returning athletes from Rio 2016 (both men) and two olympic debutatnts (both women) the only athlete with olympic medal experience in the team being Matej Beňuš.

Matej Beňuš will return to the Olympics for the second time in his career after his debut in Rio 2016 (Silver medal), the 33 years old paddler will have the hard task to keep the nations olympic medal streak in this discipline. Probably the athlete who will have to face the biggest pressure of all our delegation based on whole nation expectations.

To qualify for the Olympics in this event is very difficult for a Slovak C1 athlete, with only 1 quota available you have not only to qualify the country to the games but on the way also beat your own countrymen opponents, the likes of Alexander Slafkovský or the world sport legend Michal Martikán. They are all still 10 times consecutive C1 Team world champions...

Jakub Grigar 24 years old, just like Beňuš will also compete at his 2nd Olympics in a row. Still young K1 paddler will try to improve his 5th place from Rio 2016 where he as Semifinal winner missed the medal by some 0.2 seconds and gold by 0.9 in the very last gates combination of the final. Jakub was the first Slovak canoe slalom paddler to earn his Tokyo berth, alreay at the 2019 world championships he secured the quota for himself. Grigar travelled to Japan in good mood after he won the last World cup race before Tokyo in Germany last month.

Monika Škáchová 20 years old. Will be the first slovak Canoe female competitor at the Olympics in history, debuting in the very first edition of the W C1.

Slovakia btw survived some scare here since we won the quota as the very last country, at the European Championships in Italian Ivrea this May. Monika secured the quota by earning the last single available quota place and by finishing higher of all other slovak competitiors.

Eliška Mintálová 21 years old, is another sign of the raising new generation, She managed to qualify for her first careers Olympics by defeating experienced olympians Jana Dukátová and Elena Kaliská in the internal qualifiers, that is already a achievement by itself. The country qualified for Tokyo in this event at the World Championships in La Seu d´Urgell 2019 alongside of both men events.

Michal Martikán failed to qualify in M C1 for Slovakia after he lost in the internal qualifiers to Matej Beňuš and also Alexander Slafkovský. and since he has nothing else to do now, he accepted the offer of :AUT team to train Nadine Weratschnig in W C1 in Tokyo. So he will be in Tokyo as official member of Austrian team coach

The track is quite challenging.

Eliška Mintálová (W K1) had an accident during one of the last week training session when the water literally threw her boat on to a panel on shore,

nothing happened to the boat, but she broke her toe.

triple fracture and dislocation of the big toe.

However she does not want to lose her olympics debut such way and will compete even with this hurting handicap

    • I wonder if there is some drawback to this, we'll see I guess, but this sounds like an excellent change I think? I remember Acosta in Paris, that was....not amazing
    • writing here because it's going to heavily impact on the Olympics, but it's part of a way bigger blow for many sports in Italy    earlier Today, the Italian idiots running the government did change the rules about getting the Italian citizenship because of the heritage (ius sanguinis) now, only foreigners with at least 1 parent or grandfather/grandmother born in Italy will be able to ask for our citizenship now all those people with the Italian heritage coming from men/women further down the family tree won't get it because of that (of course they will still be able to earn it following the remaining pathways, like marriage or living here for at least 5 consecutive years -if coming from EU Nations, 10 if coming from outside EU)   this is basically the end of any chance to have an Italian competitive team in all those team sports where there are not enough athletes practicing within our Country like ice hockey, field hockey, baseball, cricket, lacrosse, flag football and even rugby (just to name the olympic sports), all disciplines where we always relied on major help from foreign born Italians   but this soon will affect also a few individual sports, when the consequences of the pandemic stoppage will come into effect (soon)   for this thread's purpose, it' obvious that now we won't have any chance to have a decent hockey team at the 2026 Home Olympics; we are forced to stay with the current shameful B division bunch of drunk players that can't even skate
    • NOC's qualified for the free dance (and eligible for earn Olympic quotas):    x3  x3  x2  x2  x2  x2   20 teams qualified but only 19 will earn quotas.
    • Maybe now the sport news and people here can do a little less celebration the next time a russian figure skater has their own disaster.Karma is a thing in sports too apparently, just had to get a bite in that a russian representing georgian had a disaster that opened the door for one of our own to the olympics. And now our main pair fall, whoops.
    • it took two Olympics (and 4 years) for UWW to finally realize there is a big big flaw in their current rules (we have this since early 2021)   in Greco-Roman, in high level specially in heavier weights it's just hard to score. in this case sometimes the match ends up 1-1. (1 pt for passivity caution for each) under current rules lots of wrestlers decide to be intentionally passive in first 2 minutes to receive the first caution. this created lots of ugly scenes in Olympics. for example  Yasmani Acosta won an Olympic silver in Paris without doing a thing! he was passive in his 3 pre-final matches and won all of them 1-1    UWW will test a new rule at the European Championship next week, only in case of 1-1 and only in Greco-Roman whoever gets the first point wins. I believe this will become an official rule soon, they should make this change long time ago but yet late is better than never   https://uww.org/article/uww-test-new-greco-rule-2025-european-championships
    • are my favorites for the time being.    could definitely grow on me as well. There's very few songs I'd count out before I get the chance to see them during the live shows.     P.S. "Baller"  would play at a trendy shop in LA, and I would enjoy it
    • Yes, correct. Anyway still not officially confirmed by our NOC though
    • They failed to qualify for the free dance by *0.01* points.
    • Massive upset by :LTU Ambruleviciud/Reed scoring 20 points less than usual after a fall and failing to qualify to Olympics. Massive blow and shock as they were basically almost guaranteed top10
    • 64.83m from 16 YEAR OLD Ziyi Yan  for a new world junior javelin record.....which she already owned.
