  1. Thanks! I wish this team would get more recognition in the USA. They don't get nearly the same press in the USA as opposed to USA women basketball, football and volleyball.
  2. Didn't realize that, thanks. I do know that when Bermuda won the women's triathlon in Tokyo, God Save the Queen was played.
  3. HK is a separate political entity, for now, until 2047. Really HK's status is like Puerto Rico and a lot of other territories competing separately. One difference is that when Puerto Rico wins a gold medal, they don't play The Star Spangled Banner, but Puerto Rico's anthem. However, note that Bermuda and other British territories (and HK pre-1997) do use God Save the King as their anthem.
  4. Hong Kong is administered since 1997 by the PRC. But the agreement between the UK and PRC when Hong Kong was turned over to China stipulated that Hong Kong would be a separate political entity with its own government until 2047. But since China controls HK, The March of the Volunteers is the official national anthem, not God Save the King as it was pre-1997. Taiwan, on the other hand, is, in PRC-parlance, is a breakaway area that is still part of China. But since China has no political control over the Taiwan government, they still use the ROC anthem. However, for the Olympics, China can dictate what song is used for Taiwan gold medalists.
  5. Chinese Taipei has its own song for gold medalists, but its not the ROC national anthem. That was all part of the deal with the PRC to allow Chinese Taipei to compete - they could not use their official national anthem (or flag). I would assume this was also the anthem pre-1949.
  6. Whatever became of this idea? https://www.designboom.com/design/philippe-starck-olympic-medal-paris-2024-07-24-2017/
  7. Lance Larson 1960 The "winner" of the 100 meter freestyle. Lance Larson, ‘winner’ of the most controversial swim race in Olympic history, is dead at 83 – Orange County Register (ocregister.com) Two-Time Olympic Medalist, Former World Record Holder Lance Larson Dies At 83 (swimswam.com) The "official" gold medalist in the 1960 100 FS, John Devitt passed away last August.
  8. Peter-Michael Kolbe age 70, 3 times a silver medalist (76, 84 and 88) in single sculls. He also won 5 world titles between 1975 and 1986.
  9. Qualification - W Field Hockey, hopefully, but unlikely, today. Medal/Gold, most unlikely but cherished (as of today, at least) - Jessica Davis W Modern Pentathlon.
  10. 2030 and 2034 to be awarded next year. Sweden and Salt Lake City, I guess. https://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1141684/ioc-double-award-2030-2034
  11. For US, just more of the same as in 2020 with 0 male scullers.
  12. Very sad story here. Alexandra Paul age 31 dies in an automobile accident. She competed in ice dance at the 2014 Winter Games. Skate Canada says former Olympic figure skater Alexandra Paul killed in car crash | CBC Sports
  13. For even years, instead of a WC, why not bring back the Intercalated Games or the Goodwill Games at the least? Well, the standing jumps, Greek stlyle discus throw and freestyle javelin came and went and the sport has managed to stay relevant. So I guess eliminating a few less popular events now won't matter.
  14. I don’t see North America.
  15. Price goes into 7th.
  16. Tom Countney 2 x 🥇🥇 800m and 4x400 m at 1956 Olympics has died. Tom Courtney, Olympic Gold Medalist and Fordham Sports Great, Dies at 90
  17. He was 3rd according to US TV announcers. (Announcer said the teenager from the Netherlands gets bronze.)
  18. Exactly. Which is why Kennedy and Moon are tied for first.
  19. USA announcers don't understand the rules on total misses at lower heights.
  20. 1976 Olympic Games, same race, 3000 m SC. Frank Baumgartl stumbles over the last barrier and hits the deck, gets up to his feet and finishes third. (He was in second place at the time.)
  21. Kerley just said on US TV that s*it happens and he f*cked up but he's healthy and life goes on.
  22. Austria (with 3 world championships), Mexico, Panama, Italy, Canada, and Denmark, looking at recent WC results IFAF Flag Football World Championship - Wikipedia Its basically American football with no tackling or helmets - you stop the play by pulling a velcroed "flag" or strip off the offensive player who is in possession of the football at his/her beltline. At least that's how it was in my school days.
  23. I think those three are already approved to be on the core LA 2028 program, before we even begin to talk about what added sports there might be.
