  1. I would say its rather like asking why womens ice hockey is at the olympics. Besides that i dont see how rugby, basketball, field hockey or even volleyball can be called euro-centric. The same is true for curling and ice hockey at the winter olympics.
  2. https://swimswam.com/whats-at-stake-at-2018-u-s-nationals-all-selection-procedures-here/ I think he won't be able to swim the 100 free individually at the 2019 worlds, but only the relay. I guess he can still gain an individual spot in the 100 fly or 50 free.
  3. Do you have any medal chance on the mens side? On the womens side probably: 100 m (if Schippers competes), 200 m, 400 m, 5000 m, 10000 m?, 100 m hurdles, heptathlon, 4 x 100 m relay. I would say 5 medals would be more realistic.
  4. Let's say that 8:44 converts to about 8:20 for 3000 m flat, then we are looking at the 6th or 7th best time over 3000 m flat ever (only behind 6 chinese girls and Obiri). The 7th best 3000 m flat time on the men's side would be 7:28, which would convert to 7:48-7:49 for 3000 m SC, so you also consider the men's 3000 m SC world record soft? Another example Warholm ran 45.0 and 47.6 this season, so if we say that the hurdles add about 2,5 seconds, then a appropriate 400 m hurdles world record would be something like 46.1-46.2 (7th fastest 400 m ever is Merritt with 43.65, add 2,5 seconds and you get 46.1-46.2), about 0,5 seconds faster than the current world record.
  5. Yeah, the dutch relay could have won the bronze medal probably, in the 4 x100 it's a three way fight for silver and bronze.
  6. Incredible results for Italy once again, fencing is for them what canoeing (or luge if we talk about winter sports) is for Germany. With very smart funding they continue to keep their dominance alive. I hope that Japan will get (much) better in the next 2 years. Who knows, maybe France will soon start to invest a lot for 2024 olympics, trying to challenge the italian dominance.
  7. I hope that Adrienne Sternlicht will be nominated (for obvious reasons). Just a shame that they all have to wear helmets, i think if FEI would allow them to ride without helmets, riding would win a lot of younger fans. Do you know whether she is related to Barry Sternlicht? If so, this would be another very interesting person in show jumping (after Georgina Bloomberg and Jessica Springsteen). By the way, her last name means something like "starlight" in german (Stern = star, Licht = light) ...
  8. The dutch relay would have probably been the favorite for silver, no this might open the door for Switzerland. The german relay will be fast in the long run, but with Mayer out and Pinto not fully fit something around 42.3-42.4 seems to be the limit.
  9. 1) I don't know when the schedule was made, if it was made a couple of months ago, then i dont agree. Back then Spelmeyer still had to be considered a realistic contender for the final. 2) We dont have to discuss that this schedule is stupid, but i kind of like it. I think its gonne be fun to see all those women compete for individual medals and then to come back only an hour later to compete against each other again, they will have a chance for very fast redemption. 3) Germans are know for their efficiency, this way those girls can get all their competitions done on the same day, so we will have less costs for transport, less environmental pollution and they dont all have to stay for a very long time in Berlin in case they have something else to do. Edit: Last year at the world championships Spelmeyer was the 2nd best european athlete, so i guess the question whether your point is valid can only be answered by looking at when the schedule was created.
  10. Great win for 17 year old Rudolf Molleker against David Ferrer in Hamburg, up to around 240 in live rankings, another win would bring him close to the top 200. He hasnt much to defend for the rest of the year, so maybe he can finish around 150. With him, Auger-Aliassime and Kuhn we could have 3 18 year olds entering the top 100 next season. I think in 3-4 years the top 20 will be very young with those guys + Zverev, Shapovalov, Tsitsipas, Kyrgios, Thiem and so on.
  11. Thanks, so indeed a worrying state german eventing is in, you dont think Auffarth will be back for 2020? Dujardin also plans to come back, do you think she will become a dominant force again?
  12. Do you mean a "How many athletes will your nation qualify" thread?
  13. I think it would also be nice to have a "Biggest favorites for 2020 olympics" thread, so that after the 2020 olympics we could look back at the predictions and compare them to the actual results, i think this would create a lot of "How the hell was XY ever considered a favorite" moments and would maybe help against the "post-olympic slump" a bit.
  14. As a german fencing fan you can never expect too little these days ... men's sabre used to be an almost guaranteed medal, Schmidt also completely out of shape and Ebert completely without a chance against one of the italian athletes. I think this time more german athletes will qualify for the olympics (women's foil team and men's sabre team mostly), but at this point the chance for ONE MEDAL is probably below 50 %.
  15. Do german fans have to worry about eventing and dressage? Surprisingly jumping was the best event for Germany in Aachen and the german team looked more than vulnerable in eventing/dressage. Where are Sprehe, Rothenberger, Auffahrt and Jung? Would you still call the german eventing team (Jung, Auffahrt, Krajewski, Hoy/Klimke) favorites for the WEG and what about the dressage team?
  16. I think only Germany beat them in group stage. Good generation for Israel, but probably no NBA talent. In my opinion U20 is less important than U18 anyway. Too many top talents were missing, France was missing 10 guys or so and Germany was also missing 3 out of their usual starting 5. U20 isn't a great indicator for future success in my opinion.
  17. Wow, thats slow ... have you ever been faster? I remember running around 2,8 km in 12 minutes when i was 14 or 15.
  18. What about the progression of the american record in the steeplechase, almost as bad if you ask me (same is true for what Houlihan is doing in the 1500/5000 m).
  19. And thats just your opinion. Jebet just has been called out and now someone doesnt just break her world record, but by 8 seconds, i hope that records like that keep coming so that the same thing that happened in cycling will also happen in athletics. TV stations will hopefully drop athletics events from their broadcast so IAAF will be forced to do something. I know that the situation in cycling is probably even worse now then when Lance was doing his thing and that the doping never stopped, but at least the riders (mostly) tried to make their performances seem realistic. As a person who cares about justice, many of those performances in athletics currently just have to make you sick.
  20. Amazing result for this young team with two 24 year olds, wonder if Deußer and Ahlmann can get back into the team. Hopefully they will perform the same way at the worlds.
  21. Exceted about the german future in this sport. Men's eight and women's quadruple sculls are where they should be and finally a great talent in men's single sculls, only men's quadruple sculls is a bit worrying. I thought that Naske would end the german drought in men's single sculls, but apparently it will be Zeidler. Considering the age of the other top guys and the fact that Zeidler started rowing only 18 months ago, i see a good chance for him to medal in 2020, winning the first german medal in men's single sculls since 2000 and maybe even the first german gold in this event since 1992. Now that the qualification for the world championships is over, i hope that Naske and the second german team in women's quadruple sculls will be used to strengthen other boats.
  22. I expected nothing less from the french people, they are world famous for behavior like that. Probably will find a reason to make this day a national holiday, so that they can work even less.
  23. Quality-wise a really poor tournament with almost all big teams (except for France) flopping. In major leagues there are just too many games, it's probably no coincidence that the 2nd youngest team won. Let's hope that players will be less exhausted in 2022. France was the best team and deserved the title, they will only get better and will be the team to beat in the future. For me it's still weird to see so many players with a foreign background in their team, i would imagine it's hard to identify with this team for many white people in France. I know that France has a lot of people with a foreign background, but not clearly over 50% as in their football team. Mbappe of course was the best young player and Courtois was the best goalkeeper. Hard to tell who was the best player, noone really stood out.
  24. How was it a revenge when the girl that beat her last weak didnt compete here?
  25. Female players who won 3 different slams in the open era (without achieving the career grand slam): Virginia Wade, Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport, Monica Seles, Hana Mandlikova, Evonne Goolagong Cawley, Justine Henin, Angelique Kerber Female players who won Wimbledon, the US Open and the Australian Open, but not the French Open in the open era: Virginia Wade, Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport, Angelique Kerber (On the mens side: Boris Becker, Arthur Ashe, Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras, Stefan Edberg) Female players who won the career grand slam in the open era: Billie Jean King, Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert (On the mens side: Andre Agassi, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal) Kerber is just one French Open title away from becoming the 7th female player in the Open Era to win the career grand slam, something even Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters, Jennifer Capriati, Monica Seles, Lindsay Davenport, Venus Williams and Martina Hingis didn't accomplish. This would also make her only the 11th player (male or female) to accomplish this in the open era.
