  1. They can only play with 9 players? In a sport like ice hockey that's impossible. That's like asking a single person to run a relay.
  2. Better than a Pan American Winter Games assuming Canada and US send their best teams. Though I guess a number of nations could win bronze in team events. They should have let Australia and New Zealand be eligible for medals, at least it would have added more competition.
  3. I agree, the depth in ice hockey low so, when you have Championship tier nations playing against a Division III nation you end up with a blowout. France will also easily win by double digits. It'll be the same thing with the South Korean women's team at the Olympics. At least the men's team may avoid getting completely stomped in all of their matches.
  4. According to the main site 644 athletes from 34 nations will be competing. Russia and hosts Turkey will send 75 and 69 athletes respectively while Sweden will send a lone figure skater.
  5. The main site stole the ice hockey schedule from the Winter Universiade so it looks like Canada, China, Kazakhstan and the United States are competing. Still waiting for a participating nations list on the main site. Click on game day details
  6. Won't they compete as neutral athletes? Also the news is not surprising, they have been dragging their heels throughout the entire time.
  7. As a hockey nation China's men's team is weak. They're a division II team (playing in the B group in 2017). Meanwhile Kazakhstan spends its time bouncing between division I and the championship group. Obviously both nations aren't sending their best players, but Kazakhstan would have to send a very weak team (which would be weird considering they are hosts) for China not to get crushed.
  8. The Caribbean Football Union is considering to split from CONCACAF http://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1046180/caribbean-football-union-considering-split-from-concacaf
  9. I’m pretty sure the teams are here through invitation. College teams are also a bit different so using the world ranking is a bit unfair. At the last Winter Universidad the US women’s team failed to reach the semi-final. An unthinkable feat had it been their true team.
  10. The US wanted to rig the groups so they could go against Canada in an outdoor game. So instead of using the more logical option of switching Canada with Sweden they placed the 1st and 2nd placed teams with teams placed 8th, 9th and the promoted team while teams ranked 3rd-7th were placed in the other group. Using the old standard the groups should have been... Group A: Group B:
  11. The IIHF likes to make money and Canada loves the tournament. If they could they would have the tournament in Canada every year. Last time it was in Buffalo Canada "invaded" the United States.
  12. Here’s a list of eligible tripartite nations. Basically if you qualified less than four athletes (not counting team sports; field hockey, football, handball and rugby sevens) at the last Youth Olympics then you are eligible. Sadly due to qualifying in 3x3 basketball Andorra, Guam and Syria are not considered to be tripartite nations. Edit: Though to be fair Andorra should qualify in basketball again
  13. I must have miscounted
  14. Here are most of the files containing the qualification pathways. Thanks to the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee for hosting them. All that is missing is football (futsal) and the sports recently added to the program; dancesport (break-dancing), karate and sport climbing.
  15. Spain would block any attempt Great Britain (or even just Gibraltar) would make.
  16. Well that confirms will have its first Olympic medal, it can still potentially be upgraded to silver. It is quite a travesty that the nation had to wait over 8 years after the fact.
  17. It took me a while to figure out that they mean the overall games will have parity, not each sport Boxing +4 Men Gymnastics Artistic +2 Men Gymnastics Rhythmic +6 Women Netball +1 Woman Shooting +1 Man
  18. At minimum 10 (from the rankings) then it depends on where the remaining three ranking quotas, host and tripartite quotas end up.
  19. Qualification procedures to the 2018 Youth Olympics were announced about two weeks ago. Many dates have yet to be finalized, but you can see the general idea of qualification. However, most sports have yet to publish the qualification procedures (because there are few/no dates known), here is what I have so far. Archery Badminton Equestrian Judo Sailing
  20. Sadly I don't think the NHL players will go to the Olympics outside of a few that might beg their teams to release them. 2022 will seem likely because it will be held in China. Outside of the general level of play it pretty much will kill Canada and US's chances at winning.
  21. One more game. Europe played well, but Canada has shown that it is in a league of its own at this tournament.
  22. When I have Pan Am/Commonwealth Games discussions one criteria I used was whether or not we have at least 8 competitive nations (as in, won't get embarrassed) in each sport. If not then maybe the sport shouldn't be in the games.
  23. Congrats to Team Europe, but you'll need something extra special to defeat Canada (aka 2010 Halak)
  24. Well there are basketball courts near beaches where I live, but I get your point.
  25. It's a shame the Asian Beach Games don't have more water sports, the water is like half the beach. Sailing is a bit omission, you could also add surfing or water skiing. Canoeing isn't exactly a beach sport, but you do have rowing (maybe paddle-boarding). I'm also glad cross-country made it to the program. I personally find it more interesting that the 10000m track event.
