  1. We'll see, but it does look like Australia brought their "A" game. At least it's impossible for them to win all of the quotas as they have already won two in the women's trap.
  2. Qualification document More specific... A quota place can only be obtained if the result achieved by the athlete or Mixed Team in the qualifying competition where the quota is obtained is equal to or higher than the MQS for that event.
  3. Assuming Germany and Great Britain get the job done. Should Ireland defeat Canada then if South Africa withdraws it would go to South Korea.
  4. Except if you read the document, declined quotas are reallocated to the same event, not the multiple athlete pot. Likewise the document above states Belarus received the host reallocation.
  5. Argentina got its quota from the Czech Republic (Spain declined while France's athlete is already qualified in the K2 1000m). Spain's unused quota really should have gone to Sweden in the K1 200m and if Sweden declined it, it should have gone to Russia in the K1 200m and while that would mean Russia has two kayak men quotas, neither of them competed in the K2 1000m so the whole "athlete qualified in another boat" thing won't count. While it doesn't mean much in terms of number of athletes, it's significant because athletes must compete in the boat their athlete quota was qualified in.
  6. True, but they may try to qualify it on the off-chance someone decides to outperform them and decline it if no one does. It probably won't happen, but they could.
  7. If they want, both Brazil and the United States could still qualify in the K1 at the Pan American qualification.
  8. and picked K1 so the C1 quotas were reallocated to and and picked C1 so the K1 quotas were reallocated to and
  9. Yeah, at the end of the day, everyone knew the rules (as dumb as they were) well in advance. The point was to create depth for the sport, oppose to nations only having four athletes each. Here's hoping for a 16-team tournament in the future with continental qualifiers so that the best can have an opportunity to qualify.
  10. So despite being second in the rankings I made yesterday the Canadian women don't even qualify to the Olympic qualification tournament
  11. I was bored, here is what the top 10 would look like if we only used the top 4 players from each nation (I only looked at the top 1000 players). Men 1. Serbia - 6,234,720 2. Latvia - 6,036,160 3. United States - 4,971,879 4. Slovenia - 4,555,680 5. Lithuania - 4,475,760 6. Canada - 4,006,120 7. Netherlands - 3,964,080 8. Russia - 3,162,320 9. Mongolia - 2,714,920 10. Switzerland - 2,519,560 Women 1. France - 2,176,360 2. Canada - 1,549,480 3. Russia - 1,438,010 4. Italy - 1,393,680 5. China - 1,389,720 6. Spain - 1,361,900 7. Netherlands - 1,264,200 8. Poland - 1,150,100 9. Japan - 1,121,503 10. United States - 1,012,950 Both genders only have one team (Serbia and Russia) which overlaps with the current ranking list. Additionally, the host quota would go to the women. For those curious, in the men's ranking China is ranked 12th while Japan is ranked 14th and in the women's rankings Romania is 13th while Mongolia is 17th. I'm surprised how well Canada is doing, though I knew they were trying to send a quality team. Hopefully they will compete in the qualification tournament, though it will be hard to defeat the European teams.
  12. Well Mongolia looks very safe, especially with the rule that only a maximum of two nations from the same continent can qualify via this method.
  13. The Oceania Championship begins this weekend. One thing to note is that athletes must achieve the MQS DURING the event in order to be eligible for the quota. This may allow for athletes which finished at a lower final ranking to obtain the quota and it is quite likely that quotas may have to be reallocated. Looking at the MQS list, there are no Oceania nations which have achieved a MQS in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions (where two quotas are suppose to be given) and only one athlete has reached the mark previously in the men's 10m air pistol and women's 25m pistol. Additionally, the only non-Australia/New Zealand nation to have reached a MQS mark previously is Fiji in the men's trap, though he will have a lot competition as it's the event with the most depth.
  14. That's denying the fact that badminton's strength has been in Asia for decades now. In a Commonwealth Games perspective wrestling is now pretty much a Canada/India/Nigeria show, not exactly universally diverse (other than we have three nations from three continents competing for medals).
  15. There are "non-white" core sports; badminton, table tennis, weightlifting and wrestling. The non-Olympic core sports make sense from a Commonwealth point of view. Cricket should be a core sport too, but that's a whole different issue. As for shooting, I just think it's because it has never been a priority for nations. Like if you asked all nations to pick their top three sports I don't think shooting would feature on many lists, but at the same time most people were fine with it being on the program. No doubt it's the most high profile sport on the optional list, but as host nations face more pressure to cut costs, optional sports not popular with the country will likely face the chopping block. Look at track cycling in South Africa's bid, the only reason they changed their mind was because other nations/organizations were going to essentially pay for the venue.
  16. Finally got around to updating the athlete database on my website. Below are athletes not yet listed which achieved a top 8 result in an Olympic event at a World Championship dating back to 2017. Albania – Evagjelia Veli (Weightlifting, Women’s -59kg) American Samoa – Josh Failauga (Wrestling, Men’s Freestyle -57kg) Benin – Odile Ahouanwanou (Athletics, Women’s Heptathlon) Bosnia and Herzegovina – Nedzad Husic (Taekwondo, Men’s -68kg) Turkmenistan – Kristina Sermetowa (Weightlifting, Women’s -55kg) For your "qualifies by merit" restriction, are you counting only World Qualifiers or would qualifying via Continent Qualifiers be enough?
  17. I agree, as long as you acknowledge that it wasn't done as an anti-India thing, but a pro-England thing.
  18. Yeah, if England wanted to strengthen their position they would have gotten rid of swimming (I know they can't). In the end their only competitor (especially as hosts) is Australia. Shooting is an optional sport and the host wanted to save money. I do hope this experience will get the shooting federations to push it to be a core sport. Especially since both triathlon and wrestling are core sports and have less depth than shooting.
  19. Pretty much. I think they have three athletes that have met the minimum requirements, though I'll have to double check.
