  1. Two more bronzes to end the games with 8 medals. Overall not too bad, all things considering.
  2. It's the difference between Europe and Asia. Europe tends to benefit from a combined Asia/Oceania (the old Oceania quotas will go to the overall pool which is usually won by a European nation) while Asia will be hurt as you are essentially adding an overall top 10 nation (plus New Zealand) into the mix. The lose/lose scenario is what we have in football where Australia adds more competition to Asia while Oceania still retains its quota. Well, everyone loses except Australia who made the move to AFC so that it can be exposed to more talent.
  3. That's the more impressive part IMO. How can you be so good that you can score 82 goals yet let in seven?
  4. Olympic Quota Race - After Day 2 Men's RS:X - 13 - 30 Women's RS:X - 26 Men's Laser (Top 5) - 9 - 12 - 36 - 47 - 50 Women's Laser Radial - 18 - 24 - 34 - 37 - 53 Men's Finn - 21 - 23 Men's 470 - 58 - 66 Women's 470 - 18
  5. Well, we equaled the number of medals won relative to 2016, though the distribution was nicer in 2016. We still have chances tomorrow too.
  6. Sadly unless Slovenia wins the whole thing that is now impossible...
  7. Yeah, I don't think anything will be done here. The events included international athletes so it's hard to argue the events shouldn't count. Personally I dislike world rankings deciding who qualifies as a lot of them don't really determine who is the best, just who competes the most. With that said, I have no problem with the way those athletes qualified as everyone knew the rules long before Olympic qualification began.
  8. I think that seals Slovenia's spot to at least the OQT. The nation will need a result against Norway tomorrow to reach the semi-finals or hope Hungary fails to win both of its matches.
  9. I just noticed the Oceania wrestling championship was cancelled. This means they won't be eligible to compete at the African/Oceania qualification event (unless they change the rules)
  10. Yeah, Germany is guaranteed to finish third in their group so that means Sweden needs to finish third in the other group. For that to happen 5/6 of the remaining matches need to go Sweden's way plus they need to have the goal differential go their way. Norway/Iceland doesn't matter though Iceland winning would give Sweden two opportunities to get the right goal differential. Hungary and Slovenia are the favourites for the two spots, but Portugal has matches with both of them and thus can still control their fate. Iceland needs things to go their way plus they have to win against Norway tomorrow. Edit: Forgot that one of the four could also win the European Championship which would then allow seventh place to qualify to the OQT.
  11. Baseball5 is still non-existent so it's hard to judge its merit. Yeah, in reality which ever sport agrees to have their best players will have a huge advantage. In terms of costs I don't see the two sports being much different. Baseball/Softball and Cricket will likely have to wait until another team sport is removed before they are added just so they can use the athlete quotas. The whole point is moot until you can argue that those sports deserve to be in the Olympics more than Field Hockey/Handball/Rugby Sevens/Water Polo.
  12. Ignoring the whole "convincing the top leagues to release their players" I feel cricket has a better chance at being a permanent member on the Olympic program than Baseball/Softball. The sport actually has a base in Africa (South Africa/Zimbabwe) and it does a better job at adding more diversity. Baseball may add Venezuela/Panama/Nicaragua as nations which rarely compete in team sports, but cricket also has those options (Jamaica/Barbados/T&T/Guyana competing separately) and a more diverse selection in Asia (Afghanistan/Bangladesh/Sri Lanka) rather than the usual Japan/South Korea
  13. Just an update for the Miami World Cup. Cuba no longer appears on the entry list for any event. This makes the Olympic quotas for non-Laser/Laser Radial events into a one or two nation race. Men's RS:X - Women's RS:X - Men's Finn - Men's 470 - Women's 470 -
  14. Yeah, they've massively overestimated the depth of non-European continents. The number between compulsory places and additional quotas should be flipped, as in... World Champ - 1 Host Nation - 1 Africa - 2 Asia - 2 Europe - 2 Pan American - 2 (or 1 for each if they still want to have the split) Oceania - 1 (should they meet the minimum qualification) Wild Card - 1 And then take the top 20 from the previous competition's results. It's a bit weird as only 24 teams participated last year, but it'll make more sense in future editions. Basically the quota distribution for 2021 using my method would be... Africa - 4 + 1 Host Asia - 4 Europe - 15 + 1 World Champ Pan America - 5 (4 South America + 1 North America/Caribbean) Oceania - 1 (Should they meet minimum qualification) Wild Card - 1 Not sure why they want to split Pan America. It may have made sense when there was only 24 teams as Argentina/Brazil/Chile were ahead of the rest of the continent, but after that the two regions are a lot more comparable (with an advantage to North America/Caribbean) and more often than not the continent should have at least 4 teams at each edition.
  15. Another reason why most people put up with Oceania quotas for Australia and New Zealand is that more often than not they have enough talent to at least justify a spot for them. Similar for United States/Canada in Pan America or China/Japan/South Korea in Asia. Of course this does not occur for all events, but at the same time, sport federations don't want to make it look like only 1 or 2 continents care about the event or else they risk the event being cut from the Olympics.
  16. Sadly until we create a system where 200+ nations can participate there's always going to be someone missing out. It's unfair to make things easier for Pacific nations by removing Australia/New Zealand while doing nothing to help the small states of Europe or smaller Caribbean nations in Pan America, etc (or by creating a very complicated qualification system that essentially makes the tripartite commission redundant). While a lot of continental quotas do end up going to the big nations from each continent it's still better for the smaller nations than the alternative of not having continental quotas.
  17. Yeah, a Slovenia win here means only Portugal can catch them. A Hungary win makes things a bit more crazier. Looking at the schedule I would think Hungary would be the favourites at that point as they only need to win one match while the other likely need to win both of their matches. Of course things get a bit more crazier should Sweden defeat Norway later today.
  18. It's a 12 team tournament and when you exclude the already qualified nations, Slovakia is probably among the best not yet qualified. Looking at the qualification tournament only five from Europe will qualify to the final Olympic qualifier so you need a top seven finish. Though I doubt Pan America will send three nations with both the United States and Canada already qualified so I guess Europe will send more teams.
  19. So despite having four nations in the quarter-finals it looks like Western Asia is going to have only one reaching the semi-finals.
  20. We're at that stage where 12 feels too few where nations like France or Germany could miss out, but 16 is too much as it causes nations like Malta to compete. I guess it depends on the philosophy you have...
  21. That's two sailing quotas for Mozambique now. Not too surprised if that is true. I wonder if there was any footage of the race, I would like to watch a 1 vs. 7 race with the one winning overall.
  22. Nice to wake up with Canada winning a couple of medals.
  23. Serbia and Croatia are not exactly powerhouses on the women's side. It would help the sport if they (along with Montenegro) were though
  24. Looking at the current entry list for the Miami World Cup which will double as the North America & Caribbean qualifier. Excluding the Laser/Laser Radial not too many eligible nations are competing in multiple events outside of . is competing in the men's RS:X while is competing in the men's Finn (he has a good chance at winning the quota). Currently are eligible in both Laser events while are eligible in the men's laser and are eligible in the women's laser radial. Additionally, is the only eligible nation to compete in the women's 470 so it may obtain a free quota.
