  1. But then the number of athletes may not be even. I guess the rhythmic gymnastics quotas can be offset by the extra men's teams in football (72 athletes), but that would be too few, even after reducing the team event down to 12. Maybe FIG could argue for more men's artistic quotas and say they belong to specialists.
  2. I think the events are mostly set for 2024 (barring weightlifting getting completely kicked out), I'm thinking ahead as to how the IOC may make medaling events gender equal (because they will). Gymnastics poses an interesting conundrum where they'll have to work with wrestling to keep their respective disciplines in the games or either axe the artistic apparatus events or increase the women's event to six apparatuses by adding two of PH/Rings/PB/HB, neither of which are ideal.
  3. In terms of being removed without being replaced 8 karate events 4 weightlifting events 2 baseball/softball events New events which did not replace existing ones 2 breaking events 2 sport climbing events This gives us a net event count of -10.
  4. Take that up with FIG who refuses to make a men's rhythmic event, just like UWW refuses to make a women's Greco-Roman event. FINA can see the writing on the wall and is developing mixed duet in artistic swimming which will likely allow it to survive in the coming years.
  5. In terms of medals, men are still +5 thanks to 6 extra Greco-Roman and 1 extra boxing events on the men's side and is only offset by 2 artistic swimming events on the women's side. The extra events in men's artistic gymnastics are cancelled out by the two women's rhythmic gymnastics events. In terms of athlete numbers men have +72 in football, +96 in Greco-Roman wrestling and +22 in water polo while the women have +96 in artistic swimming and +94 in rhythmic gymnastics which creates a net zero difference. It'll be interesting to see what the IOC will do to make medal events equal. The simplest thing would be to drop the extra boxing event (so it's 6+6) and to add the individual apparatus medals for rhythmic gymnastics. I'm not a big fan of making each rhythmic apparatus a medal event, but the alternative would be to drop rhythmic gymnastics and either don't award medals for individual artistic gymnastics apparatuses or to somehow make the women's artistic event have six apparatuses (among other changes).
  6. Yeah, I imagine traditional TV ratings are down, but streaming/replays ratings more than compensate for that drop.
  7. The first qualification event could also be the South American qualifier for women's football.
  8. The issue is the IOC requirements (or expectations since they are technically relaxed now). Once the IOC becomes more open to 2000-5000 person stadiums (especially ones which will be new/temporary) rather than 5000-10000 capacities for most events, a lot of the costs will drop (more so than making each event have less than 20 athletes), the venues will be usable post-games and nations will be more open to hosting.
  9. Final day of competition is unsurprisingly a quiet day, but Canada will have one final medal opportunity in track cycling where Kelsey Mitchell will compete in the women's individual sprint.
  10. It's funny that boxing will be a huge part in determining who tops the medal table
  11. Depends where you are, near Vancouver it's warm enough all year round (as in rarely goes below 0C) to practice which is why that province has the most athletes per capita competing here. The size of the country is also another issue where it is hard to have a centralized sport center for each sport.
  12. Our top three sports historically are athletics, swimming and rowing, but Canada is more of a generalist rather than focusing on a limited amount of sports. This gives us a lot of diversity in our medals, but at the same time we suffer from "being good, but not the best" a lot.
  13. That'll be hard, our best chance would be in canoeing (women's C2 500m) and cycling (women's individual sprint) and both of those are quite low.
  14. Day 14 saw Canada win four medals including gold in women's football, our best day of the games. Day 15 sees things winding down, but we still have medal chances in athletics (women's 4x400m relay), canoeing (women's C2 500m), diving (men's 10m platform) and karate (men's +61kg).
  15. Day 15 will need to be a big day for if they are going to catch . They'll have a better final day so they don't need to catch them, but they can only really afford to be 1-2 gold medals behind by the end of the day. Team sports and relays will need to lead the way. If China has a good day among the combat sports it might be over.
  16. I expected 20 medals with a range of 15-25 so we did around what I expected, though we do have more medal chances tomorrow so we could hit that upper range.
  17. It was only a matter of time, Sweden has been by far the best team in the tournament.
  18. She's basically keeping Canada in it
  19. 20 athletes still in contention after 30km Time to head home and catch the end of this race.
  20. To be fair, in artistic gymnastics there is a lot of overlap between the events. Even outside the Olympics FIG is barely welcoming towards specialists.
  21. Luo still holding a 22 second lead over the rest of the field after 15km
  22. Until they add pressure sensors to shoes this won't be happening any time soon.
