  1. Overall no medals for Canada on Day 10, the first time since Day 1, but the 1-0 victory against the United States in women's football still made the day a success. Day 11 will likely be another quiet day with our best chance being in athletics (women's hammer throw). There's a chance in artistic gymnastics (women's balance beam) and maybe track cycling (men's and women's team pursuit) if they can recover from a bad qualification round.
  2. Basketball gets overhyped in Canada, but with that said, we should have been good enough to reach the quarter-finals.
  3. What a way to wake up. I knew the United States looked beatable, but to see it actually happen is another thing. Sweden has been the best team so far in this tournament so it will be a tough battle.
  4. They would all need to make the first jump without error and then fail three times at the next height then all agree not to have a jump-off. So technically yes, but you can bet that forced jump-offs would be a thing at future events.
  5. There's still a couple of chances remaining for Portugal in athletics with men's triple jump and women's discus throw, plus men's K1 1000m in canoeing
  6. The second best performance is counted I think for field events
  7. Most likely, our best chance would be in the men's 3000m steeplechase, but I wouldn't hold my breath. With the end of swimming Canada no longer has consistent chances each day
  8. Pan finishes the day with a -8 to move up to currently third overall
  9. Canada would really appreciate if Hungary can come back and win against China. A small chance against Hungary is much better than no chance against the United States. That or we need to score an upset against the Netherlands
  10. The 800m freestyle is like having the 3000m event in athletics so if there has to be cuts, it will likely be the first to go. In terms of competitiveness (as in the number of nations competing) the 400m IM is the least competitive individual event and could also be at risk. The 4x200m relay is also quite uncompetitive and may be removed. At best FINA could combine it to make it a mixed relay (and unlike athletics have a set order for male/female athletes) As for the medley relay, FINA needs to decide whether to have separate genders or a mixed event. Personally, there's enough competition to have it split, but you can't have both.
  11. Another good thing is if one sport lags for a while then others can compensate. I'm not sure what to think of the men (outside of athletics). It's not like they have been completely off the map, they have several top 8 finishes and it can't be a coincidence that they are having an off period in almost all of the sports.
  12. Yeah, a lot is going on for Canada on Day 9 with medal chances in artistic gymnastics (women's vault), athletics (men's high jump, men's 100m), diving (women's 3m springboard), sailing (women's laser) and swimming (women's 4x100m medley relay). Hoping for a multi-medal day. This will be the best chance for the men to get on the medal board.
  13. This stems from Canada being good, but not great in many sports so while for other countries they pick up their medals from their strength, Canada's top performance distribution more resembles a bell curve with a peak at around fourth.
  14. A lot higher than you think given the population of the country
  15. Not always, the combined time of finals for Dressel/Jacoby was faster than Weitzeil/Andrew (though just barely)
  16. with another medal, will it be gold or silver?
  17. I guess the combined time for woman breast+man free was less than man breast+women free
  18. The difference is that there isn't a separate men's/women's relay in triathlon so at least it isn't as useless as the athletics/swimming relays. Regardless I don't think the event is necessary because you are essentially forcing standard race triathletes to compete in a sprint triathlon (though there's a lot of overlap)
  19. Hopefully they can put the loss behind them and go for bronze. Two medals in one Olympics for Fiji would be massive
  20. So close for Fiji, they are having the tournament of their life.
  21. Not really, the three combined are still behind Australia. With a 1:07.xx breast, the United States will pass us, but we are favoured for bronze and hold about a 1.5 second lead over the rest of the field.
  22. Too bad we don't have a top breaststroke swimmer, could have been a threat for gold...
  23. Awesome silver for Masse, crushed her national record
  24. I mean relays in any sport is essentially a test of a nation's depth so it makes sense that big nations medal.
