Canada shines atop the world

In our ninth and final Power Rankings, Canada finishes first after beating Finland 2-0 in the gold medal game. Host Russia is third. See you next year!

Perry joins TRIPLE GOLD CLUB

Stanley Cup, Olympic gold, and WCh gold

Canada’s Corey Perry is the 27th member of hockey’s most exclusive club.

 

After winning a Stanley Cup with Anaheim in 2007, he was on Canada’s Olympic champion team in both 2010 and 2014.

 

Now that he has captained a World Championship gold, he is a member of the Triple Gold Club. Canada now has ten such members, followed by Sweden with nine, Russia six, and Czech Republic two.

 

Last year countryman Sidney Crosby was the 26^th member after Canada’s win in Prague. Perry also won World Junior Championship gold in 2005 with Crosby.

 

The 31-year-old Perry was presented with his TGC pin by IIHF President Rene Fasel just moments after stepping off the ice with a gold medal around his neck.

Canada remains first

Finland, USA move up in World Ranking

 

With its 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship win Canada also defended first place in the 2016 IIHF Men’s World Ranking.

 

Thanks to the gold-medal win Canada even extended its lead with 3495 points while Russia has 3380. Finland and the U.S. are third and fourth respectively now. Both moved up one spot at the expense of Sweden, which fell from third to fifth place after missing out on the semi-finals this year.

 

The four following places remained the same with the Czech Republic (6th), Switzerland (7th), Slovakia (8th) and Belarus (9th). Germany, one of the hosts next year, moved up from 13th to 10th place after reaching the quarter-finals for the first time in five years followed by Norway, which remained in 11th place. Denmark also made a move forward after reaching the quarter-finals, from 15th to 13th place, while Latvia (12th), France (14th) and Slovenia (15th) dropped down. Kazakhstan, Austria, Italy, Hungary and Poland complete the top-20.

 

Note: The groups for the 2017 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship are not determined yet and will be announced in the upcoming days following meetings with the stakeholders involved in the event that will take place 5 to 21 May 2017 in Cologne, Germany, and Paris, France.

 

but at this moment the groups for 2017 IIHF WCh are:

A- ( ? ) in Cologne, Germany

B- (   ?) in Paris, France

The Groups are determined by this key

A- 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12, 13, 16 of the annual IIHF ranking

B- 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14, 15 of the annual IIHF ranking

Both Host countries must be agreed, and this year we have an exception with both co-hosted countries, they will meet in the next days to determine the groups. France already announced that they wish to Have Canada in Paris and Germany want Russia in Cologne, if it happen the groups will be like in this post.

Groups for World Championships 2017 named.

 

and it´s absolutely the oposite of which everyone (including me) expected

 

Group A (Cologne, GER)

 

Group B (Paris, FRA)

 

top 4 of each group will qualify for Quarterfinals.

 

Last team of each group will be relegated to Division I A 2018.

(Denmark is automatically saved and can´t be relagated, as host of 2018 world championships) which means if Denmark finish 8th of their group, the 7th team of the group A will be relagated.

here are the explanations about IIHF world ranking. http://www.iihf.com/home-of-hockey/championships/world-ranking/

 

in fact they use the last 4 world championships + last olympics.

they count 25% of points of 2013 WCh, 50% of points of 2014 WCH, 75% of points of 2015 WCH and 100% of points of 2016 WCh + 100% of olympics Sochi 2014 tournament.

 

so thats why Russia is still ahead.
