Instead of all crap; let us focus on the main sports. The rest are all of also-ran type.

These sports are:

1. Shooting

2. Wrestling

3. Badminton

4. Boxing

5. Hockey

6. Archery

7. Weightlifting

8. Athletics

India has traditionally performed well at the Olympics in these disciplines.

The rest like Judo, Swimming, etc. are just a waste of time at the Olympics.

Let's have a guess from the participants about the number of medals we can get.

I disagree with this view simply because we shouldn't measure our sporting pedigree by just medals but with progress as well. We being a developing nation are not able to invest much and with no accountability in various Sports Federations they have become political fiefdoms. Also public and media visibility is less other than for Cricket.

But our mindset has changed in the last decade or so. Earlier, we were merely content with qualification; now we genuinely want to win the tournament. This feeling has seeped in our core sports like Cricket, Badminton, Hockey, Shooting, Wrestling and will slowly come in other sports as well.

With each Olympics our contingent becomes larger but like a large nation like ours its still pathetic but at the same time slow and steady progress

In world championship Swimming I don't think we have achieved any QST. Aryan and Sajan fell well short.

Sajan's timing of 1:58.45 is well within the OST time of 2:01.03 but quite behind OQT of 1:57.50. Aryan's time of 15:59.47 is way outside of OST time of 15:28.02.

Basically, all swimmers who achieve OQT (A standard) are guaranteed to be part of Olympics. If after inviting OQT swimmers, relay swimmers and Universality places, there are any additional quotas left, FINA starts inviting OST swimmers. So, in order to qualify through OST, one needs luck and needs to be close to OQT timing to be quite high up in the ranking list.

Apart from Sajan, Kushagra Rawat and Advait Page have also achieved OST in 800m freestyle.

Good bets

Vinesha Phogat in womens wrestling... she has some thing in her.... even though she has changed her weight category to 53 kgs (which am unable to understand even now considering she won the gold at Asiad in 50 kgs) she is too good to be defeated by wrestler from countries other than japan or russia

Mirabhai Chanu in weight lifting…. only worrying factor is change in weight category from 48 kgs to 49 kgs

Amit phangal in Boxing... again worrying factor is change in weight category to 52 kgs from 49 kgs in which he won gold at Asiad

Womens boxing - I have a strong feeling that atleast one of womens boxer will win a medal...

apurvi chandela / manu bhaker in shooting

Madhu ji, let me comment on Vinesh and Amit.

Vinesh: it was on cards considering she has had difficulties in cutting down weight and has admitted to struggle. Remember 1st qualifying tournament during Rio 2016 where she failed to be under 48? Secondly, her decision of shifting to 53 (which she feels is natural body weight) seems justified for now. Only a couple of losses - one to Chinese whom she later defeated at Asian repechage and then Mukaida. So been doing pretty good so far, reaching two ranking tournament finals and bronze at Asians.

Amit: As far as international tournaments go, he has participated in two and won both at 52. At Asians in April, he defeated Hasanboy (Gold at 49 in Rio) again, and before that the Chinese (Bronze at 52 in Rio). Also his level could be guaged from his domestic domination. At 52, we have some good boxers like Sachin, Gaurav... but Amit does stand apart.

Hope that answers your question!

    • It's good that Argentina is starting to get back on track economically. Every year, all of our alpine skiing teams train in August in Argentina in Ushuaia: "Fine del Mundo", as it advertises itself.
    • The relation of Trump with Russia and, more specific, with Putin is probably the most controversial (being generous) thing of the presidence of Trump, i dont believe the same but is clearly that China help democrats in that election, both are playing their games.   In Argentina the society is clearly divided, the people who are in the left side of the politics, peronist and kirchnerism are very against the goverment, propably the only genuine "rigth-wing" goverment since the recovery of the democracy in 1983. For me and the most part who are in the rigth wing: libertarians, nacionalist and conservatives, is probably the best goverment we see to this days, he made in his first year with a very few legislators in the congress some big and good changes:   1) In the economical: the inflation is only 3% per month since a more of 15% in the last months of the last year, Argentina has now fiscal, financial and comercial surplus-   2) Our country didnt have fighter planes and the goverment buy 24  American F16  -   3) He chances the electoral sistem for a "single ballot" sistem, we have an obsolete electoral sistem that doesnt change from the 19 century and specially, the peronist use for make fraud.   4) In my personal case, he really update the tax sistem for smal/medium profesionals and traders.......and that save us to pay the 50% of our earnings to the state.   With a big expectations in the goverment, its better than i thinked before.
    • It could be better, or it could be much worse, for example, if the accusations that he has been accepting large amounts of money from Russia since 2017 are confirmed. Now let Harris win, which will end Trump's political career and I hope that in 4 years the Republicans will put up someone more predictable.     btw, how is this controversial president of Argentina doing?
    • More predictable is not always better, for me the goverment of Biden was one of the worst of the History of USA and i cant imagine what can happen with even a worse version like Harris is.   I hope, for the contrary, Trump be elected and "may be" the things changes for the better in the world.
    • I once read that Harris had never been to Europe before 2020, when she became vice president. On the other hand, her foreign policy will be more predictable, because it will be a continuation of Biden's policies. That is why I hope Harris wins, although the bookmakers are betting on Trump.
    • Harris is totally green on foreign policy. It will probably be a policy 100% led by Biden's people. Harris' main campaign emphasis is on abortion and women's rights.
    • So much for "everybody's laughing at us if we elect Harris"
    • My favorite tennis tournaments of the year (wta/atp finals)
    • was also invited to the special edition of the Bolivarian Games and seems like  is not participating.
