Olympic double Bronze medallist (400m & 1500m Free) and 800m Free reigning World Champion Gabriele Detti (ITA) is officially out of the 2018 European Championships, after his left shoulder injury is slightly improving, but not enough to allow him to be in decent shape for this event (and it's also a precautional decision of not trying to hard and making further damages to his left shoulder ahead of the 2019 and 2020 seasons, which are a lot more important to him and to Italian swimming than this year's Continental Champs)...

So Dressel has to qualify for next year's world championships in another way?

yes, but I don't know if they will use next year's Nationals or another system (with more flexibility than the previous years)...:mumble:

however, I guess they will go for the 1-shot event next summer just before the World Champs, as they normally do with the Olympic Trials...

I think he won't be able to swim the 100 free individually at the 2019 worlds, but only the relay. I guess he can still gain an individual spot in the 100 fly or 50 free.

About womens 200 back: Franklin was certainly faster as a junior (2:04.06 at the 2012 olympics), but FINA doesnt count those times. I think junior world records were introduced in 2014 or 2015 and only times achieved since then + times swum at previous editions of junior world championships count as junior world records. In many other events the official junior world records arent the fastest times ever swum by a junior, for example:

In mens 400 free the junior world record officially is 3:44.60 by Mack Horton from 2014, while Ian Thorpe swam 3:40.59 as a junior at the 2000 olympics. Danila Izotov swam 1:43.90 in the 200 free as a junior in 2009, but the record is 1:46.40 by Ivan Girev from 2017. Michael Phelps swam 1:55.94 in the 200 IM as a junior, at the 2003 world championships but the record is 1:57.06 by Qin Haiyang from 2017. Kosuke Hagino swam 4:08.94 in the 400 IM as a junior at the 2012 olympics, but the record is 4:14.00 by Sean Grieshop from 2014. On the womens side 24.33 by Rikako Ikee from 2017 in the 50 free is a record instead of 23.99 by Cate Campbell from 2009. In the 100 back the record is 58.95 by Regan Smith from last year instead of 58.33 by Franklin from 2012. In the 200 fly its 2:06.29 by Hasegawa instead of 2:04.72 by Jiao Liuyang. In the 200 IM its 2:09.98 by Ikee instead of 2:07.57 by Ye Shiwen and in the 400 IM its 4:39.01 by Rosie Rudin instead of 4:28.43 by Ye Shiwen.

    • It may also be that Ceccerelli saw that the conditions in the Italian youth teams were very poor and that is why she insisted on setting up her own team (the results of young Italian skiers unfortunately confirm this). A private team will always be better than a team with 10-12 skiers with max. 3-4 coaches, a one doctor and a physiotherapist. Colturi is the only skier in her team and she has several coaches, a masseur, a doctor etc. Of course, it costs money, but since the parents are famous and have money + Red Bull got involved. I don't understand why she can't start for Italy again? Red Bull should care more that Colturi starts in Cortina under the Italian flag than the Albanian one + Red Bull, as a brand, always has a bigger sales market in Italy with a population of 60 million than in small Albania. I hope that this can still be reversed by next year. For this we need talks between the federation + Colturi's parents + Red Bull + possibly the Italian Olympic Committee. Colturi may be a skier equal to Brignone or even better in the future. We can't lose her, so we have to do now!
    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto form I`m happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it`s already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track. I hope that she understands this, because in short track she has a real chance of winning medals in the women's relay and the mixed relay but in long track not.
    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
    • There are few people here from Austria, Switzerland, Norway and Finland.
    • The worst editions in XXI century for us were Vancouver: 5 medals (only 1 gold for Razzoli's on the penultimate day) and Sochi: 8 medals (but no gold). Turin was already a prelude to this bad period, although the number of gold medals was ok. Overall we won fewer medals at home than in 2002 and this was probably the only case in the 21st century when the host country won fewer medals at home than 4 years earlier, either in summer or winter. In general the years 2008-2016 were very bad in our sport, both in summer and winter. Only 2018 in Korea was a slight rebuild + 2 fantastic summer editions in Tokyo and Paris. in Beijing 2022 we won a lot of medals - 17 but only 2 gold (If it weren't for Gogga's injury, I think it would have been 4 gold).
    • Totallympics had  users at one point, but I haven't seen any hanging around in a while.
    • In terms of total medals, yes. In terms of golds, I’d be fine with anywhere from 6-8.   @intoronto you don’t think we’ll do better or at least the same? Bit surprising.
