Speed Skating at the Winter Olympic Games 2018

Does this result mean Achtereekte and Das are qualified?

Edit: to answer my own question, Achtereekte is officially qualified, Das still isn't.

According to the NOS, Achtereekte is sure. Das still has to wait. However, all big favorites have qualified and with the qualified athletes, we can build a good team for the team pursuit. So I doubt that Das won’t make it.

If either Antoinette de Jong, Wüst or Achtereekte finishes top 2 tomorrow on the 5.000m, I think Letitia de Jong (Wüst’s girlfriend) will also qualify as #3 on the 500m.

Achtereekte: yes

Das: mostly yes, in theory she could still be replaced by someone if the federation wants to do so, but that's highly unlikely

Holy crap, 1:07.64 for Nuis, a huge new 'sea level world record' :hyper:

Nice for him that he finally made it, after missing out on the Olympics the last two times (even though he was good enough to qualify in those seasons, he failed to be at his best at the right time)

Men's matrix already has 10 different names.

Yep.

Kramer

De Vries

Nuis

Bergsma

Verweij

Mulder

Verbij

Smeekens

Krol

Blokhuijsen

It seems quite likely that these are going to be the 10 headed to Pyeongchang (possibly no Krol if Verbij gets the 1000m spot, although Krol has a 1500m chance as well).

Cruel way for Letita de Jong to be bumped off the team. Still, she is definitively the least deserving of the 11 on the selection matrix.

Edit: Also I get Bergsma is going to get to do the 5000m anyway xD

    • How wonderful!   I met the national rowing (and beach rowing) coach of EST/LTU/LAT on the way to ice hockey one day, who's Canadian by the way. I also flew home on the same flight as JC Schoonmaker's mom and friends, so we chatted for a bit.
    • Yea I only used transit besides this Uber / bus to the airport and back. All the venues were at the end of the line, so it allowed you to speak with other fans/volunteers etc. I even met Corrine Stoddard's mom after the first session of short track on the way back, and told her to remember our conversation if she won a medal later in the Olympics. We know how that ended up...
    • I used public transit the entire time I was in Milan.   My first day was a doozy, because I had to two flights to reach Malpensa, and then the train into town was delayed, and then I got confused a station and boarded a tram instead of the metro, proceeded to travel in the wrong direction, got off, walked back to the station, found the metro, got off a station early, walked around a kilometer to my hotel, and checked in.   My colleagues mostly took cabs upon arrival, but I deduced to take the frugal approach. That said, I was a true public transit professional by the time I left Milan.   I actually enjoyed my rides to and from venues, because I'd just chat up fans and volunteers from different countries. It helped me learn more about the city too.
    • It's the olympics, sleep is for the weak!    The first day i got there i was on a 12 hour flight from l.a to rome (flight that left mid day), lay over, another flight to milan, uber to hotel, then right away to speed skating (1500m men), then after uber to hockey venue for women's gold final, then after the celebrations uber to the hotel, i ended up being awake about 36 hours that day, the next morning i thought to go sightseeing in the center of milan, but ended up sleeping until like 2pm..... and had speed skating/short track that night
    • I tried to get onto the metro multiple times and gave up    I had just arrived the day of from Bangkok (12 hr flight) and was just exhausted and wanted to sleep
    • Plus, you missed out on a potential metro ride with me, which is quite priceless in my opinion
    • My hotel was very close to Rho so was easy to get there, but it was so far from the hockey venue that after the women's gold medal match it was so expensive to get back, and also the next day after the usa slovakia semis it took forever, the asshole driver took the city and not the freeway
    • Uber cost me $224 CAD to get back to the hotel from the OC. It basically prevented me from buying tickets to a speed skating session
