Today one of the highest quality tournaments on the international calendar has started: the Dutch Olympic Qualification Tournament, of course in Heerenveen's Thialf stadium. 

 

We started off with the women's 1000m, where Jorien ter Mors took the win and the 1st Olympic ticket, followed by Marrit Leenstra. Ireen Wüst, silver medalist in Sochi, finished in 3rd and will have to wait and see how the other distances end up to know if she can start in Pyeongchang (nothing to worry about yet, I'd say it's extremely unlikely she ends up out of the places on the 1500, 3000 AND 5000 meters). Small detail: Wüst was 0,10 seconds faster than Letitia de Jong, who misses out on her chance to go to the Olympics because Wüst beat her.....and Wüst is her girlfriend.

 

That was followed by the men's 5000m and boy, that was unexpected. The win didn't go to Sven Kramer, who had his 100th senior race on this distance (and won around 90 of them), but he wasn't beaten by still out-of-form Jorrit Bergsma or other main 5km rider and Sochi medalist Jan Blokhuijsen....but by 33-yeard old Bob de Vries, who before this OQT literally said "this is my last chance". De Vries, who starts off his days by milking the cows on the farm before going to his training, had the race of his life and won ahead of Kramer. Blokhuijsen came in 3rd and, seeing he's of vital importance for the team pursuit, will most likely be on the team for Pyeongchang.

No problem for me Bergsma missed out, especially after his coach was all cheering and shouting of happiness when Kramer came in 2nd (Bergsma went in the heat after him)

"Speed" and "Skating" belong together like "Winter" and "Olympics" in this case, at least for me. You have successfully broken my harmony.

here you can find startlists, results and also the general scheme for who's going to be preferred in the final selection based on the placings in the various events (it's just above the results -uitslagen- list)...

With the minor addition that there is still the option for certain (big) names to be chosen if for example they were on their way to winning but fell.

I guess De Jong still has her chances in the 1500m, where the top 3 have an Olympic place guaranteed...

moreover, the Ter Mors/Wust/Leenstra trio should already be in because of the other events...I mean...in any case, her name should be among the top 10 of the selection scheme, so to be named for Pyeongchang (I also see that she has a sort of bonus being one of the 3 provisionally named athletes for the Team Pursuit)...

so, I think she won't miss out her trip to Korea anyway (even if it remains to be seen if then she actually gets an individual start once there)...

meanwhile with that kind of scheme I don't know if there will be place in the team for even a single 500m only specialist (among the girls, obviously)...

 

in the men's competition, instead, I see the things being more easy to understand...basically the top 2 in any event get their individual start and probably there won't be many 3rd ranked guys on the final selection (maybe 1)...

and because of today's result, I think Blokhuijsen now is really with his shoulders against the wall...I think only a top 2 finish in the 10k would save his flight to Korea (where his absence could lead to some troubles making up the team in the pursuit events -as I see, he's 1 of the 3 provisional names for that event)...

same for Bergsma, of course...but here I guess there won't be many people crying for such possible epic fail...
