At this point it would be hard to see them included, given there’s been no real progress in Russia being reintroduced in sports (and also no meaningful progress towards an end of the war).

I think that team sport will be unavailable to Russia, not only hockey but also curling, bobsleigh, relay in biathlon, short track, speed skating etc.

Yeah, at this point it would be quite difficult for the IIHF to allow Russia to compete. Bach seems content to let the next IOC president decide how to handle Russia/Belarus so we might get an overall decision (full ban, AIN again or full return) for the 2026 Winter Olympics in the summer.

I don't think IIHF is going to delay the decision any more so unless they have some internal memos from the other winter sports organizations preparing to welcome Russia/Belarus back then I figure they will decline Russia's teams.

Damn, we are now officially -365 days away!  Actually less if we count Mixed Curling on Day -2 as the beginning.

Which also means that today the first groups of people have received the emails with their timeslots in which they can buy tickets. I haven't yet, my dad did and can buy from tomorrow on (for 48 hours). Still thinking exactly about what to buy, but I think we're going for the 10k freestyle, classic sprint and team sprint (women's cross-country, obviously). In an ideal situation that'd be tickets for both my parents, both Bruna's parents, my sister*, Bruna's employer and his wife and myself, I'm glad XC isn't as expensive as speed skating or ice hockey :d

*

Spoiler

ideally her boyfriend as well, but I fear that is going to be beyond difficult with his large wheelchair, in terms of travel and accomodation and everything as well

And of course we want tickets for biathlon, at least 1 women's event, to cheer for our/Bruna's friends :cheer: ( :LAT Baiba Bendika and :AUS Darcie Morton being far and away the biggest ones there)

.

One of our television channels just published a predicted athlete count at the Olympics:

Ice Hockey: 25

Biathlon: 7

Alpine Skiing: 4

Luge: 2

Ski Mountaineering: 2

Figure Skating: 1

Bobsleigh: 1

Short Track Speed Skating: 1

This should add up to 43. However, for some reason, Cross Country Skiing and Ski Jumping were completely left out.

I asked the chatgpt AI to predict the medal table for 2026. It came back a little strange

Rank Country Gold Silver Bronze Total
1 Norway 18 10 8 36
2 Germany 14 9 11 34
3 United States 12 11 9 32
4 Canada 11 9 12 32
5 Sweden 10 8 7 25
6 Switzerland 8 7 6 21
7 Netherlands 7 6 8 21
8 Italy 6 9 7 22
9 China 6 7 6 19
10 Austria 5 8 9 22
11 France 5 6 8 19
12 South Korea 4 5 6 15
13 Japan 4 4 7 15
14 Russia* 3 7 8 18
15 Finland 3 5 4 12
16 Czech Republic 2 4 4 10
17 Great Britain 2 3 2 7
18 Australia 2 2 3 7
19 Slovenia 2 2 2 6
20 Poland 1 3 2 6
21 Hungary 1 2 3 6
22 Slovakia 1 2 1 4
23 New Zealand 1 1 1 3
24 Belarus 1 1 1 3
25 Kazakhstan 1 1 0 2
26 Ukraine 0 1 2 3
27 Latvia 0 1 1 2
28 Estonia 0 1 0 1
29 Belgium 0 0 2 2
30 Spain 0 0 1 1

This is what I don't like about AI predicting sports events. When it comes to the countries, the table just looks too similar to the last Olympics.

which channel it was ? Markiza ? :d

-I doubt Biathlon will have 7. If we lucky we will have 6 (4W+2M) zero chance for more

-I do believe the amount of lugers will be higher around 4-5

-Short-track is quite utopic, there will be zero, but in other side we will have Speed Skating debut thanks to the czech guy I can not right now remember his name

-Ski Jumping we will have 2 I do believe, at least 1 for sure

-Cross.country 4 with both genders starting a team sprint

-Figure Skating is also questionable, I will  cheer for Hagara to make it, but I am afraid his lack of quad jumps will cost him the quota for now

    • you're obsessed! but who cares about a team of mercenaries? the players have to be true "Italians", which means they have to have Italian blood running through their veins, they have to feel the love for the Country, they have to feel their heart bumping when the Anthem is played, they have to really want to play for us there's no need to bring here people not good enough to make their native NT, just pick and train our young girls! waterpolo isn't that complicated, just needs a strong physical preparation and being smart enough to understand the tactical situation and take the correct decisions in the pool   ps and frankly, better find a swimmer capable of winning multiple medals than a winning team in a sport watched just by the players' relatives 😈

    • I don't think rankings are fair in cricket. There's no cricket between India and Italy or Papua New Guinea for the latter team to improve their performance or get better in rankings. It's just top 8 teams that regularly play against each other.   In long term, if more teams being competitive there will be more interesting match ups rather than between same old teams.
    • I understand your disappointment as a neutral Olympics fan  , but the qualification pathway that both ICC & IOC has agreed on is based on pure merit. In fact many other Olympic sports has world ranking system as the primary  means of qualification . This achieves 2 things, it rewards the best nations in that particular sports who have managed to perform at the highest level over a period of time rather than a one off playoff/qualifiers & secondly it ensures you get quality matches among the best teams in the world at the Olympic level. There is a reason world rankings are used as a parameter for qualification in multiple Olympic sports.  I am delighted for  & they qualified on merit albeit via penalty kicks, but how many Canadians (or the global audience)will be interested to watch a World cup opening match at home v  as compared to v . You will get your answer as to why ICC choose world rankings over  a random qualifier.

    • It would be great if  women Italy water polo returned to the top, where volleyball is now. These 2  teams + basketball and football and maybe softball, would be a nice to see for the women's team sports in LA in 2028.   https://www.instagram.com/p/DVs-BAdjPyd/?img_index=2
    • https://www.instagram.com/izachiappini   She's currently playing in Roma, but I see she's 171 cm height... She's a bit short, and that's a big problem for the Italian National Team. I also don't know if there's even any talk of her returning to the Italian National Team? She is 31, which is still an age to return to play in NT. The ITA has changed head coaches, so maybe there's still a chance for a her return? There's no one left from that 2019 team, except for Roberta Bianconi.
    • For me, it's nonsense –in the Italian National Team played with players from Hungary, Brazil, etc., although perhaps not at that particular time. Regarding the 2019-2021 period, it was a generational change after coach Fabio Conti times. The team was in crisis and didn't qualify for the 2021 Olympics. I don't remember what the atmosphere was like back then, but honestly, I don't remember that particular this Brazilian player in our squad. If there was a problem, it was more of a personal one. Many people from that squad are gone, but the crisis in the Italian team continues and is more of a structural one – the players are too weak physically. In my opinion, it would be advisable to naturalize someone strong to change the Italian team's power.
