GB official medal target announced as 'best away Olympics ever' topping the 47 medals won in Beijing with a target of 47-79 medals. Individual breakdown below for UK Sport funded sports (excludes Table Tennis and Sync Swimming):

wow 274 million pounds ................thats a huge budget for the olympics ............I can understand they are not funding golf or tennis ....what about Rugby thta is a team sport and possibly needs a lot of investments.....................Interesting but shooting seems to be the lowest cost per medal ratio with just about 1.7 million pounds per medal .......................and judo incredibly expensive at 14 million per medasl

I assume it's because Rugby is a profesional (and well paid) sport in the UK so it can fund itself?

Rugby has more than enough money in the UK to fund itself, the sad thing is that many sports in the UK like Table Tennis, Volleyball, wrestling, handball, water polo, synchronised swimming and basketball get no funding, so future growth in these sports is more difficult.

A lot of money is invested in sport and the government  has committed to increasing sport funding by over 20% in the road to Tokyo 2020. Hopefully this money can bring with it success this summer, otherwise lots of sports can expect their budgets to be slashed significantly.

New Zealand Olympic Committee has a medal target of 14 or more medals. I think this is a good safe target, it's best not to get ahead of ourselves because sport can be unpredictable. Theoritically the team is very strong across the board but it's best to curb those expectations a bit, because we've experienced disappointment before.

Surprised to see Table Tennis under the "no funding" sports list.

:POR Portugal's NOC rejects any concrete goal regarding the number of expected medals at Rio 2016.

The official NOC goal was to qualify more than 76 athletes (our athletes at London 2012), and that goal has been achieved,

Nevertheless, our press states that, despite not saying it in public, the expected goal should be one medal, with an excelent scenario to be leaving Rio with two medals.

  • 2 weeks later...

Our officials have never made any predictions concerning the medal chances but i think to overcome the result achieved at the 2012 Olympic Games (2-2-6) is the main goal. Let's see:mumble:
