In any case, Italian wrestling is practically done now that Chamizo and Conyedo have left. Without further naturalization, we can abandon this sport- a waste of time and money.

Zahid Valencia  into the Gold Medal match in 86kg.  He took down Kamran Ghasempour , who is a 2x WCH gold medalist.  Valencia hasn't lost a match this year...hopefully the streak will continue!  Will face Ishiguro Hayato  in the GMM tomorrow.

Russia flopped this championship so well, I guess problems with entry in Croatia did them very dirty, and I love it

And the 18 year old Jax Forrest came up short in the BMM in 61kg, but still no reason to be ashamed.

Even more impressive is that Valencia didn't give a single point in all his 5 matches.   And he isn't some new, unknown name, he has been on the circuit for a while, but nowhere near as impressive as this performance.

on paper Iran have a strong freestyle team this year, loaded with lots of former World/Olympic medalists but we knew most of them are not in a good shape. for example Nokhodi at 79 didn't wrestle a single match since 2024, coming of a knee surgery. Yazdani at 70 was kind of a last minute change. Ghasempour was forced to cut to 86 to help the team. 

 

125kg gold was a sure thing before the Championship but the rest failed to win the gold  we grabbed and will grab 4-5 silver and bronze medals and are leading the team race though.

 

we still have two more chances left, hopefully at least one of them makes the final and win the gold. finishing the competition with just 1 gold will be a failure. 

I was really sure about 92kg gold but Firouzpour just bottled it against the Russian (probably the weakest Russian wrestler here) 

 

the team race is between Iran, USA and Japan and will be decided in the last day.

I'm new to the wrestling world, but I was pleased to see that the US made it to a couple of other GMM today.  

 

74kg - David Carr in repechage

79kg - Levi Haines in GMM

92kg - Trent Hidlay in GMM

 

We'll see how these shake out later!  I haven't followed the sport enough to know if US is traditionally good at wrestling or not, but hopefully we'll do well!

and occasionally they also had (and have) a few great greco-roman specialists

I remember that in 2000, it was a man from the USA who defeated Karelin in Sydney, ending his long- winning streak for many years. Do you remember the name of this American? It was a huge topic of discussion in the sports world at the time, not just in wrestling.
