I'm actually more mad about this than about it being a 2028 qualification event. You can't change what is and isn't a qualifying event AFTER THE EVENT HAPPENED.

To be fair, I don't think it was ever a qualification event. I'm positive some news agency in South America made the claim and everyone, including the author from Olympics.com just followed suit without bothering to check if it was true.

But it was written in the tournament's regulations, so the claim was made by CONMEBOL themselves.

This is a mess, I did think it odd for it to be a qualifier event. But the deadline for them to sort out this nonsense was probably before the event actually ended

Conmebol confirmed this was a qualifier but

 

"Yes, Conmebol over stepped. But FIFA won't vacate those spots. Brazil won't play World Cup qualifiers or the new Nations League. They will have to accept it"

Yeah, they basically need to create a new Olympic qualification tournament (or use the World Cup results)
