Looks like one of the eighth-finals will be GBR-Japan so one of them will make the top 8 for the first time ever.

Yeah with Russia being banned and Canada not competing, it was quite possible we would have a situation where a weaker nation could sneak into the quarterfinals.

 

With the Olympic field expanding to 12 nations I feel there might be an opportunity for these nations to get more funding. Even if Russia returns and South Africa takes the African quota there's still an open spot for the likes of  to qualify (we could probably add  with decent chances to qualify)

Beating China would be a success for me. We're the only top country outside the USA with so many rookies in our squad. For me, it's a mistake, because the squad from Paris wasn't old, and our team's problems are structural (players too weak physically), not personal. The USA is in a different situation, because their pool of players is much larger than ours, and I can take action like that. Italy had a solid team at the 5th-6th place level with some podium at major events (2023- Worlds, 2022- Euro) and we are miss of this opportunity to play with players who, in 3-4 years, will be at a similar level to old NT in 2022-2024.

I'd still have Italy as the favourite against China. It's definitely the strongest match-up of the playoffs.

China has hired a great coach from Spain: Miki Oca. They'll definitely get stronger, but maybe not yet and we will win. They certainly have many physically strong girls at home and if they invest more in this sport, they could replicate the successes of Beijing 2008 times. Italy doesn't seem to have a plan for women waterpolo. We're stagnant. There's no way to attract high, strong girls to this sport.

We didn't participate in the qualifying tournament (at the time it wasn't the qualifying tournament, but was retroactively added)

What a tale of two halves. Greece vs. France was 8-7 at the half. However the second half went 15-2 thus Greece won 23-9
