Modern Pentathlon Discussion | Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 Road to LA 2028

Recommended Posts

Competitions and events awarded for 2027-2028, the one in red are most likely will be direct qualification events for LA-28 (similar to previous qualification process)

World Championships

2027: Budapest (HUN)

2028: Cairo (EGY)

World Cup Final

2027: Budapest (HUN)

2028: Istanbul (TUR)

World Cups 2027

Cairo (EGY)

Kaunas (LTU)

Pazardzhik (BUL)

West Hollywood (USA)

World Cups 2028

Cairo (EGY)

Budapest (HUN)

Kaunas (LTU)

Istanbul (TUR)

The 3 medalists in individual event in W CH are qualifying in the previous process , while only the world cup winner is qualifying (I guess it would be the same)

Changes to the sport:

100m swim instead of 200m

5th shooting at the start of the Laser Run

Interesting!

Very interesting

the competition will be quicker for sure but:

- how the swimming point system will be adapted.. presumably the swimming weight should be less

- athletes with bad shooting ability will struggle more

- if shooting is at the start of laser run, the competition fate may be decided at early stage (intense and enthusiasm will be less)

Promoting bad swimmers AND better shooters over better runners (overall less favorable for endurance value) which I think is supposed to help attract new athletes - endurance is usually the biggest turn-off.

I think there was a feeling before the obstacle course was introduced that really, really solid endurance runners were starting to dominate - in Triathlon you might call it the Alex Yee conundrum. Personally, I don't mind at all if the 'martial' elements are reemphasised as that is the real 'soul' of the sport - Triathlon, Marathon and Road cycing are there for genuine endurace, MP is in some senses a 'soldiery' test - one reason I thought Judo might have been a better addition than the obstacle course. But placing a higher emphasis on the fight bits over the flight bits seems a legitimate idea - though it should also increase the X-country nature of the run so that the test of a fresh shooter at the beginning is rather different from the test of a knackered one at the end. I quite like the artificial hill in rio.

changes that go absolutely against the Italians (notoriously the top swimmers and not the best shooters in MP) 😭😭😭

now it's really time to axe MP from the Games 😈🥳

Like @phelpssaid there's a huge chance MP gets axed from OG than re-inventing its soul. The obstacle part will never become 'the' soul of this sport (it's more suitable for X Games if anything). The laser part is odd enough already. The number of participant countries will shrink, nobody will build the eligible obstacle courses if there isn't mass interest. I'd be surprised if MP is still an Olympic sport beyond 2040.

I'll enjoy it while it lasts still :)
