Rowing WR World Championships 2024

U23 Championships are already finished. Only 1 medal for us, but it was a gold in LW2X for Anastasiadou/Kontou, who defended their title from last year :yes

Also in the heat they broke their own U23 world best time by 8.65 seconds.

Of course Kontou won bronze in LW2X at Paris 2024 and Anastasiadou was 6th in W2- there, I know she seemed bitter that she wasn't selected for LW2X where we would've probably had a stronger team and maybe pushed for another colour of medal (though very difficult because GB and Romania were so strong), but it's still very impressive and hopefully she can win a medal in LA 2028, obviously it won't be in the lightweight category.

We only sent two other U23 boats, I guess that's what happens when the event is not held in Europe.

Fragkou was 4th in W1X which is disappointing after she won medals in 2021 (bronze in W2X), 2022 (gold in W2-), 2023 (bronze in W1X). She will be back in 2025 and hopefully can get another medal and continue fighting for 2028, because to be honest she hasn't been making much progress anymore the last 1-2 years.

Boukouvalas/Lykomitros were a disappointing 9th in M2-, which I didn't expect after they got off to a good start to the regatta by winning their first heat...

Paul O'Donovan won gold in the men's lightweight single sculls in what is most likely his last ever race in lightweight rowing. Well done Paul :)  :IRL

Siobhan McCrohan won bronze in the women's lightweight singles to add to her tally of world medals.

@Makedonas 2 medals for Greece in these events too :)

It may have been a barely competitive event with only a handful of people competing in it, :THA got within two tenths of a second of what feels like a rather rare world championships medal (M2-) :(

Just been catching up on some of the finals on YouTube and I notice the Canadian commentator kept referring to the cox as the coxy/coxie (?). Is that what the cox/coxswain is known as in Canada or was the guy I was listening to the exception rather the rule?

Good to see our two silvers yesterday in LW1X and LM1X. So, all 4 of our Paris Olympians who competed here ended up with medals . Just too bad the lightweight events won't be part of the Olympic programme anymore, but what a way for us to go out!

U19 finals day today. We only sent 5 boats and they all made finals :yes

W2- won silver which I am quite happy with

M2- got 5th which is disappointing after they were 1st in the heat. I wonder why they changed up this combo after we got silver at the European U19s earlier this year with Karagiannis/Koutras and then here sent Bourkas/Koutsogiannis instead...

W2X just won gold with an amazing sprint finish. They were clearly 2nd the whole race, with GB being the clear 1st, and then at 1500m, GB led by 3.51 seconds and we ended up winning by 5.92 seconds after 2000m :yikes:

I'd be pretty surprised if we don't win medals in our remaining two finals, M2X and M1X. Honestly we are probably favourites to win gold in both events so hopefully there are no surprises ;)

They both won gold :yes

M2X basically dominated the whole race, and Cholopoulos ends his U19 career with his first world title, after getting bronze in M4X in 2022, silver in M2X in 2023, and finally gold in M2X in 2024

M1X was tricky, Makrygiannis after a disappointing silver last year was 3rd for most of the race, then put on an incredible sprint (he was 6.34 seconds behind the leader after 1500m) to win gold . He is young enough that he'll get the chance to defend his title next year as well ;)

Now we'll see who will win the U19 medal count. :GRE :ROU :ITA each with 3 golds. Greece and Italy each have 1 silver also, but Italy won one of their golds and their silver in a non-Olympic category. Romania also has a good chance to win another gold in W1X...

    • The mixed events needs to go. The soccer move was dumb too. Could have easily kept it at 12 across thr board and saved quotas
    • Italy, reinforced by 4 naturalized Canadians, finally look like a team that will be able to advance higher, but of course we have to think match by match. Tomorrow we must to win against Kazakhstan. This group is very even and anyone can beat anyone, except maybe the weakest Slovenia.
    • The IOC approved some major ISSF changes, which will go into effect as early as the next competitions  Approved proposals include increasing the number of athletes in shotgun and the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol event finals from six to eight The 50m rifle 3 positions finals will feature just the standing position. Qualification still requires prone, kneeling and standing sections.   Changes have been made to the mixed team finals too, no longer creating gold and bronze-medal matches. Instead, all four teams who progress from qualification will compete together, following an elimination format instead.
    • Small thing there, men's boxing has the same number of events and athletes as in Paris. Women's boxing also has the same athlete quota, but with one more event now.
    • Ah yes, today was the dreaded "IOC news day"... As usual there is barely anything to smile at.   Men's boxing losing more weights is absurd, especially since their "gender parity agenda" is out of the window after switching the football.   Swimming getting the 50s in an already bloated program was sadly inevitable. With US and AUS the next hosts, I'm surprised swimming doesn't have 100 events to begin with.    All the new mixed stuff is Frankenstein as usual, especially the tennis and gymnastics. No one asks for these, even within these sports, but the IOC only care about "Let's have all the stars interact more with each other for maximum TV talk and social engagement, who cares about sporting traditions".   Climbing splitting the events is a positive, though for me personally I didn't see any problem with the combined. It actually showed the true overall best climbers, while now the specialists in one event will get more chances to sneak a medal.   Host sports with 6 teams are a joke and shouldn't award medals! Have them as exhibition events with a trophy etc. for the winners, but shouldn't be included in the medal table. But what do I know.   And still no news on the most important thing for me - extending the Games to 3 full weeks. Things will be crammed, crammed again..

    • As probably one of the biggest swimming fans on the forum, not too thrilled about stroke 50's being added. There's already enough events.   However, if it means that they're getting rid of semifinals for the 200m events, then that's a trade off I'll to take.
    • David Popovici set a personal and national best of 21.83 in 50m freestyle at the Romanian National Championship, becoming the first man in history under 22, 47 and 1:43 . He'll probably be aiming for the 50-100-200m freestyle triple in LA.
