Unsurprisingly, :JPN qualified overnight. Cuba and Ukraine lost their respective matches, with the latter being eliminated. This leaves the door open for Bulgaria, Iran and Slovenia to qualify. Here's how the scenarios play out.

What a match between Serbia and Slovenia. Lead changes galore. Even at the end it looked like Slovenia would take the 5th set before Serbia tied it 14-14. It wasn't enough as Slovenia wins the 5th 17-15 to take the final spot in the quarterfinals.

I imagine this will be the most predictable VNL playoffs in recent years. Italy vs. Cuba might be interesting, but I'm not confident about how much resistance China, Japan, and Slovenia can offer.

What's with these groups by the way? Netherlands is in a group with Serbia in all three weeks, but plays Serbia exactly zero times

Netherlands and Serbia are travel buddies. I guess that's not an official term, but this is how I know it. I'll try to explain it below and hopefully it won't be very confusing.

In VNL, every team has a travel buddy and it goes in pairs, meaning you are your travel buddy's travel buddy too.

These pairs play on the same location every week, but they never face each other.

Each week, a group consists of three travel buddy pairs, with the restriction that a pair can't be drawn with another pair more than once.

It's basically a way to make the draw simpler or maybe even feasible in the first place, given the chosen format. If you think about it, there are 12 matches played in each group. A full round robin format with six teams would have 15. The three matches missing would be travel buddies facing each other.

Spoiler

Travel buddy pairs, ranked from the one that got the most wins to the one that got the least.

Brazil / USA - 17 wins (49 points)

Italy / Canada - 15 wins (45 points)

France / Bulgaria - 14 wins (41 points)

Slovenia / Ukraine - 13 wins (37 points)

Cuba / Iran - 12 wins (39 points)

Argentina / Germany - 11 wins (33 points)

Japan / Turkey - 11 wins (33 points)

Poland / China - 11 wins (32 points)

Serbia / Netherlands - 4 wins (15 points)

    • I still shocks, that a country of 4-5 million inhabitants? can be a powerhouse in almost every winter sport + handball, football (most recently with Haaland) and athletics: Ingebrigtsen, Warholm, etc. With such a small population, they can't be missing out on any major talent, surely? This must be the best training system in the world...
