Post Games Analysis | How did your country perform at Paris Olympics 2024?

1. Rate the performance on a scale of 1-10

9. This was Canada's best ever performance in a non-boycotted Olympics. Only a few disappointments keep it from being a ten.

Subjectively I would say this is Canada's second best Olympic performance of my lifetime, only Vancouver 2010 was better.

2. What were the suprises and heartbreaks ?

Winning gold in the men's 4x100m relay is the biggest good surprise. Katie Vicent winning two medals wasn't a surprise, but her gold medal was a slight surprise. Two of our silver medals where big positive surprise: women's rugby 7s and the women's eight in rowing.

The biggest heartbreak was basketball. Like, all of basketball. The women's team was terrible, the men's team had an off day against France and the 3x3 women's team was too busy committing fouls to win gold.

Sarah Mitton failing to make the final eight in the shot put.

Oh and of course the drone spying scandal definitively sucked, but the team's response to it was impressive.

3.Was your country's goal achieved?

Yes.

4. Which are the sports that will be invested more in future?

Current / Upcoming sports

Canada most needs to work a lot on improving in rowing.

5. Who could be some the potential star for your country in LA?

Summer McIntosh, Illyah Kahrun and Ethan Katzberg are my three picks for our biggest potential stars in LA. Not an individual, but the men's and women's Lacrosse teams could be among Canada's best gold medal chances in LA.

A record setting Olympics with the most gold medals and total medals in a non-boycotted Olympics in Canadian history is a 1/10?

Nope, don’t know how that number got there :p

I’d say 5, because a vast majority of the Canadian disappointments came in events that I really wanted medals in.

Women’s basketball team is always terrible at the Olympics, at this point I’m used to it.

Who’s Illyah Kahrun? :p

- A solid 4. I would say. Extremely disappointing but as we got 6 medals so I would give it a 4.

2. What were the suprises and heartbreaks ?

- Medals by Hockey team and Aman in wrestling 57 kg were surprises. Hockey team was not in good form in the lead up to the Olympics but at the Olympics they raised their game. So close to the gold medal match. Aman was also not considered a good medal prospect due to his young age and poor defending skills. But he worked on both of them and improved a lot.

Heartbreak were all the 4th place finishes. Along with that definitely Vinesh Phogat in wrestling, Satwiksairaj and Chirag in men's badminton. Vinesh's story needs no introduction I guess but for Sat-Chi it was not that they were outplayed by the opponents but they just crumbled under pressure very badly. Also I would say Reetika Hooda since she lost 1-1 on criteria when both the 1-1 points have been due to passivity warnings. Shows that the scoring of combat sports are still pretty erratic and does not always favour the best athlete.

3.Was your country's goal achieved?

- Definitely not. We were hoping for 2 golds.

4. Which are the sports that will be invested more in future?

Current / Upcoming sports

- I think table tennis and hockey definitely. Both of these sports have shown such an improvement in the recent games.

5. Who could be some the potential star for your country in LA?

- So many to name. Aman Sehrawat, Lakshya Sen, Reetika Hooda, Bhajan Kaur ...

1) 6/10

2) Surprise: Jose Torres in BMX freestyle

Heartbreak: Men's rugby 7s

3) There was no official goal but all :ARG members here expected around 3 medals so I guess the goal was reached.

4) No sport will be invested more in the future. In fact, we'll be hoping for no more budget cuts...

5) better not jinx people here so no names. We have very few individual sport young talents but there are couple that are looking good, mostly in Sailing, BMX racing, artistic gymnastics and swimming. Among team sports, the hockey and rugby teams should remain strong in theory given good recent results at youth level.

8/10

Positives: Record number of medals, record golds, record number of sports that medals were won in, 4th on the swimming table, 3rd on the athletics table.

Negatives: Some big disappointments, as other Canadians have said. Basketball coming up with an air ball (see what I did there?) was horrible. So many 4ths again. I know it's a meme here, but it seriously is a national sporting problem for decades now.

2. What were the surprises and heartbreaks ?

Kind of mentioned it above.

Surprises: 4x100 relay gold, rugby silver, pole vault bronze, canoe gold, fencing bronze (and one point away from another bronze in the team event).

Heartbreaks: This is probably  more personal, but Warner (and Lepage before him) not completing the decathlon, Mitton fouling out in shot put, 3x3 and men's basketball.

3.Was your country's goal achieved?

I think so, yes.

4. Which are the sports that will be invested more in future?

I don't know. Hopefully fencing now. Hopefully they re-invest in rowing because we have a history there that has been neglected. There's so much talent in canoe/kayak that could be developed, as well as track cycling. It just takes political will.

5. Who could be some the potential star for your country in LA?

Summer McIntosh, obviously. Morales-Williams in the 400. Katzburg in the hammer. Some kid sitting at home we haven't heard of yet.
