Team GB Daily: Day 6

Recommended Posts

I think we’ve had a cracking start to the Games. There have been some individually disappointing results, but I actually think that speaks to how strong and competitive Team GB are and how much we expect of them nowadays.

Look at the fine margins we’ve been dealing with - say for example Peaty had won Gold and Richards had a slightly better finish and took Gold as well (let’s not forgot both only missed out by 0.02 of a second). Let’s say the Women’s Four had taken the Gold today. If Collett hadn’t clipped that single fence in the Eventing she’d have taken Gold rather than Bronze in the individual eventing. Kieran Reilly only missed out on Gold by 0.91 in the BMX. Fine, fine margins, and if they’d gone our way we’d be on 10 Golds and sitting second in the table which would be absolutely insane after 6 days of competition.

6 Golds, 7 Silver and 7 Bronze at this point in the Games is amazing and by no means a disappointment. You can’t expect everything to go our way all the time, no matter how much we might wish it so :)

I'm not sure on that, because the changes in scheduling means that I can't directly compare.

But in terms of total medals won by the end of day 5, it's definitely the most in the last 30 years.

My personal predictions coming into this were that we were likely to be down on golds this time out but roughly the same as we have been the last 3 cycles in terms of overall medals. The first 6 days have done nothing to change that view. In fact, we're currently 1 medal ahead of where I thought we would be, in terms of both gold medals and total medals. :)

In term of Day 5 it was the most since Stockholm 1912!

Agree with everything the sensible people are saying, the only gold i feel we have dropped so far is the women's four this morning, but that got replaced with the trap shooting. The thing that will make the difference between being a successful games (16/17 golds) and really succesful (20+) will be the events that are just a lottery. Kayak Cross/ BMX Racing/Cycling Road races/Madison's & Omnium type things.

I mean, this is what the BOA website says in their FAQs about "what is Team GB"

I can see why people call it that way, if the BOA is incorrectly choosing to name it as such as well.

Commentators have been emphasizing it lately because there are more NI athletes than ever before in the team especially rowing & swimming.

I agree that it has been a great start.

But in the interests of fairness, we've had our share of positive 'luck' as well - the Aussies mucking up the diving on day 1, the Germans losing a horse in the eventing and the quad sculls coming out on top being some of the obvious examples. Swings and roundabouts, as always happens at sporting events!

In fact, part of why I track the top 8s is because I think that sometimes gives a truer reflection on overall strength than just medals/golds do sometimes.

If Zharnel somehow medals, I shall be demanding it henceforth be GB & NI & Anguila.

Sadly, Cav retiring means that the Isle of Man loses its best chance to get added.

Spain beat South Africa in the hockey, which means the women join the men in qualifying for the QFs.
